My old age has me being drawn to opera but I know nothing about it.

Could anyone recommend an aria or two?

Fabville

Go with what you enjoy.

Some is happy, some is sad.

Try listening to a classical radio station to get a taste of what you like.

I'd like some specific recommendations as I don't know where to start.

Anything written by Puccini it's not too heavy and the arias are amazing. Especially from Tosca.La Boheme,Madame Butterfly.. Check you tube to give you an idea.Vissi D'arte.E lucevan le stele.

Also check the coca cola advert Pagliacci with L Pavarotti. Anymore please pm me.

I agree about Puccini - Madame Butterfly is my favourite. I have Maria Callas singing un bel di in my collection. Fab but not in a swinging way.

Putting the 'cum' in Eboracum

I'm more of a Mozart fan. Nozze di Figaro is great and also amusing. Cosi Fan Tutti is also a good one. Try to avoid La Traviata - beautiful music but I felt like cutting my wrists afterwards. Turandot is a good story, and has Nessun Dorma in it, but again, is quite depressing.

"No. It's dreadful nonsense."

Someone gets stabbed and instead of dying, takes 30 mins to sing about it.

Yawn!

"Start with Chopin "

Chopin wrote opera?

Try to avoid Wagner unless you're in the mood to start an invasion. Or have 5 hours to kill.

I've got a stable of self entitled misogynists to kill, will it help?

I'd go with Don Giovanni for that.

X factor Wagner?

But no, ride of the Valkyries is one of my favourite pieces of music.

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

Dido's Lament - Purcell

O Mio Babbino Cara - Puccini

The Queen of the Night's aria in the Magic Flute

And, just because I love countertenors:

Wouldn't say we were Opera Buffs but I do like a bit of Puccini blasting out the hifi speakers when I'm cooking and drinking lots of Italian red wine. It certainly helps the process along!

My spicy meat balls are a triumph
