I guess people who identify as being professionals are those who work and are qualified in a certain profession and want to meet like minded people.

I don't understand why it's such an issue, these threads always end up with rife reverse snobbery.

I describe myself as professional because my career is. Im also seeking professional people to meet with, as I feel we would hopefully be in a similar level to someone who had never done a days work in their life for instance.

Why make a song and dance over it. If you don't like people who describe themselves as professional then move on past them until you find someone that would suit you.

I have absolutely no problem with people who say they are professional. It just means they have given an indication of the type of work they do in the hope that other professionals will see it as an area of common ground.

Most people (who very obviously aren't Professionals), don't understand that the word is both and adjective and a noun.

Being a professional plasterer/plumber/singer/footballer, means you do that occupation for a living and the word is being used as an adjective.

Being a Professional (noun), means you belong to a learned ( pronounced lur ned)profession. As such, you would have at least a Bachelors degree and almost certainly post graduate qualifications, and belong to a professional body, e.g. Law, Medicine, Architecture etc.

There are a lot of inverse snobs on here who seem to take offence at how people describe themselves. The fact that it bothers you so much speaks volumes about the type of person you are.

Not really.

It has more to do with people who choose to mention that they are "learned". It's usually the same sort of tedious knobhead who frames their degree certificate and hangs it on their wall (at home, it's possibly not so pretentious if you are a psychiatrist or something and have it in your office as proof of qualification), or joins MENSA.

I have never made any reference to my academic qualifications, or my job in my Fabs profile, nor would I. If I like somebody, I like them, it makes no odds if they chose to read some books for a few years and got a bit of paper at the end of it.

I have my degree certificates on the wall. I worked really fucking hard for those qualifications and I'm proud of them. Would you be similarly dismissive if someone pinned up their marathon medal on the wall? Or had a photo of themselves performing in a play? Or some other achievement they take pride in?

It's very easy to say that people who find that sort of thing distasteful have a chip, but it's not usually the case, it's just projecting supposed insecurity onto others.

I'm highly unlikely to be jealous of someone with a degree or two, given that I have a couple of those myself.

These things only really mean something to you though, so no, I don't get it. I equally wouldn't get it if someone had a little trophy cabinet or whatever in their house.

It's my house, why would I give a shit if what I display in it means anything to anyone else? They're up there for me, not for anyone else's benefit.

I'll stick to being a tedious pretentious knobhead if the alternative is having a ginormous chip on my shoulder about people who are proud of their academic achievements.

It's very easy to say that people who find that sort of thing distasteful have a chip, but it's not usually the case, it's just projecting supposed insecurity onto others.

I'm highly unlikely to be jealous of someone with a degree or two, given that I have a couple of those myself. "

Except it generally is the case, it reeks off most of the posts on this thread. "That sort of thing"? Being proud of something you've worked hard for? Fuck me, how pretentious.

I wouldn't expect you to be jealous, but I worked really bloody hard for many years for my qualifications, have every right to feel proud of myself, and I see nothing tedious about "that sort of thing".

I don't know why it's considered wrong to use the word 'professional' to describe oneself. Its a perfectly normal adjective. It's relevant to some, it's irrelevant to others. There's many snipets of information in people's profile that could be considered irrelevant to many. But that information is relevant to some and relevant to those who write it.

This is why words on a profile are really important!

They are the start of filtering out the ones you don't want to meet or know you wont get on with.

I think it's a little self important to state that you're a "professional"

Just as it is equally as off putting to mention that you just picked up your giro ....

But that's just my humble opinion

I think to say you are professional is like saying what social class you are in. But it's not politically correct to catagorise people into social groups, so people who, a few decades ago would have described themselves as 'middle class', are finding another way to get that information across. Is it wrong? Is it elitist? Do we really live in a classless society? Or do people find they have more in common with those from a similar social background?

Exactly this!

We certainly do not live in a classless society - so maybe some people think it's more "politically correct" to say "professional" rather than "middle class"

Threads like this (granted I stopped about a quarter of the way through) are part of the reason why I describe myself s professional. It is one of many adjectives I use to describe myself and I will bever apologise for that.

And if it filters out those with a huge chip on their shoulder that somehow decide it os a pop at them or some sort of brag that I am better than them then that's a huge bonus too.

I flourish in life because I know my self worth, my achievements in education, my career and how I have driven myself to success. Yes, I would describe myself as a professional. Do I think I am better than people who choose not to, No.

But I think myself richer in character & I conduct with principles and integrity. I have drive and determination to better my life with my achievements.

I chose to raise my game to succeed, rather than the easier route some take to belittle other people's success in the hope it elevates theirs.

Being middle class has nothing to do with being a professional, I used to live in a rough part of east London moved to a nice little village earned good money my kids went to good schools & London mow seems a life time away.

My old friends now say i'm middle class compared to how i was which makes me laugh as i'm not a better person I just adapted to a different environment.

My job lets me meet people from all walks of life good bad & qualifications make little difference in the judgement of a persons character.

Have I ever used it?

Yes worked for a large publishing house andhated every bloody second of it.

Now: I own a small property maintenance company.

Would I be a professional? I have the qualifications but I am a manual worker?

The question is people can put whatever they like on their profile, they can assume you are middle class so must be a prick, young and working class so must be a chav.

I cannot see what difference it makes.

I guess the moral these frequently posted threads about the word 'professional' is that is better not use that particular adjective to describe oneself, because others will think you are 'up your own arse'. Or does it just say something about those who go round accusing others of being 'up their own arses'? I mean what an unpleasant thing to say about someone you've never met!

I don't think it's fair to say that people who describe themselves as professional are necessarily pretentious or trying to portray an image. Some will be pretentious, but not all. Also there is no evidence that 'learned' people aren't actually intelligent. Again some are intelligent, some less so.

I remember a quiz night at a swinging club which I won & someone saying it ain't true what they say about people from Essex, you think bless & humour them so not to feel silly about their attitudes lol.

Education is great but don't let it warp you into thinking you are somehow better or different than others because of it."

I would never feel I was better than anyone because I had a education or a few more schillings... I here for sex , you could be a astronaut or starving artist.... if you can take the dick I'm there

I don't think anybody objects to those who get an education. It's more that people object when such achievements are used as a selling point. It seems that when someone bigs themselves up, others will interpret it that that person is actually putting others down. I personally am confident enough in myself to not be overly concerned about people who want to tell the world about achievements that I could only dream of, and I certainly would not think that they were putting me down just because they are selling themselves.

Wow! You could make a whole chip shop with the chips in here!

I've no idea why people just can't be nice to each other. Hats off to those of you who have studied hard to get a degree. I couldn't study to save myself so there was no danger I was going to Uni after school. I went out and got a job and worked my way through a number of those till I found one I liked.

I consider myself a professional in that I get up and go to work every day to a job that I love. I get paid enough to be happy with my shoe shopping habits and I don't consider myself a big enough wanker to make other people who chose a different path in life feel bad about that. It makes me happy not to mention my job on my profile. I don't need to tell people how much I earn to make myself feel better and I don't feel bad because I'm not an academic.

Put your certificates on the wall. Be proud of yourselves and call yourselves whatever makes you happy.

But then what the fuck do I know, eh, I'm one of those fucking abominable cunts with their graduation photo in their house.

Whenever I hear the word 'abominable' I think of only one thing. So I need to ask.

Do you have to shave......a lot? "

Yes. Yes I do.

"I guess people who identify as being professionals are those who work and are qualified in a certain profession and want to meet like minded people.

I don't understand why it's such an issue, these threads always end up with rife reverse snobbery.

The inverted snobbery on Fab seems acceptable part and parcel of swinging being a pastime.

Only one of them has a perm

If seeing the term professional in a profile puts you off the profile then I'm sure you've just done the person/couple a big favour

Since when do we have to not be proud of our achievements? Oh wait, since forever because the British masses detest success

Shouldn't feel ashamed of your educational achievements, if they've made you a professional and you're proud of your achievements then that's fine by us.

Funny thing is we can't think of one occasion we've been in where said professional has looked down on others, really don't understand those comments whatsoever. If someone doesn't want to meet because of the p word that's their prerogative and we're not going to be judgemental.

Really dislike like these anti professional threads with a passion.

"Do they jump over bonnets and skid around in cars in flares and big perms?

No there anybody who is full of themselves better than other's cause they've grovelled there way up the 'career ladder'.

People who think life is only about how far you climb that ladder nothing else."

They can spell tho ........ and seldom confuse homophones ( not a gay mobile ).

How do you get through the door with such a huge chip ?

They really annoy me too, not really sure why though. Bottom line, it is the reader that has a problem not the author.

Why does what is written on someone's profile cause such consternation? For anything else the Fab answer is that it's their profile and their preference. Except if they say they are professional, it would seem.

"They're people with a job. "

This....if you are paid for what you do then you are a professional....whatever you do.

It may mean their other profile isn't on the site with multiple fishes.....but on the more elitist one....?

You can be racist, homophobic or a raging misogynist on this site and someone will defend your right to your "preference" but god forbid you take any pride in your own success.

PS...I have a physics degree and a few other qualifications but consider myself just an average guy. I don't talk about being a professional anything....it does not carry any weight if I'm meeting/fucking other swingers.
