Lunchtime today I purchased a new with tags black faux fur house of Fraser coat.

For 12.50

We will probably have a heat wave by the weekend

Do you like me enjoy having a nose to see what you can pick up ?

Or are you a snob when it comes to second hand. ??

I love second hand, it's great for the environment, great for your wallet and great for giving your things a unique twist.

My best bargain was a mint condition unopened boardgame that should have cost £60 and they wanted £2.50 (I felt too guilty to take it at that price, so did pay more, but the rest was a donation - so I'm claiming the bargain!). Clothes wise I've had some stunning accessories for maybe 50p, when I was about 12 I brought a fake fur coat for £3.00 - which I absolutely loved and wore even in the summer.

I also love buying furniture that's good quality and giving it a new lease of life with a bit of tlc. Mirrors being a particular favourite of mine at the moment!

I got a pair of trickers brogue boots for £20, excellent condition, they were £100 in the shops at the time and the last bargain I got was a brand new Ben Sherman velvet collar crombie, paid a fiver. They are £180 in the shops.

£350.00 handbag for £8.50 and John Rocha freshwater pearls for £1.50 locally! lol!

There are some fabulous charity shops off Belgrave Road too, loads of designer goods...

Believe it or not, that's far from the top end for a boardgame. Most of the ones I own are around the £40 bracket, the most expensive being £80 and there are far pricier out there! My bargain was mice and mystics.

If you enjoy boardgames I'd suggest watching a youtube show called TableTop presented by Wil Wheaton - you'd at least understand why they are worth that then!

My daughter loves them especially when she lived in London

Would buy designer stuff in them wear them a few times then sell on eBay

Me personally no as they don't have nice ones where I live

But I always donate all my clothes to charities that are close to my heart

I've had to put a total ban on shopping in charity shops because I find such wonderful designer handbags, clothes & shoes so cheaply that my house is now full

I'm having to donate & Ebay (which I loathe) in order to create some order.

I love looking at the jewellery, pictures and bits of furniture. I bought my youngest a wooden bedside table for £10.

Maybe could have gotten a cheaper one in Ikea but this one has more charachter and i didn't have to schlep into Cardiff to get it

Used to do a fancy dress pub crawl twice a year. 90% of my stuff was from charity shops. Got a sheepskin coat for a fiver once.....it was that warm and cosy I kept it for years. Must have stood me at 75p a year. It cost more to get it dry cleaned.

Shoes, brand new pair of fantasia heels ... perfect for the bedroom... can see why they were brand new tho..way too high to walk in!

Hard to believe the things some people give away, brand new items with the labels still on. Oh, now I come to think of it, I've a few items in my wardrobe like that. A sort out and a trip to the charity shop is needed I think.

I'm very fussy about which ones I shop in. Some are way over priced, primark stuff for more than you can buy it brand new!! I will have a good moan if they are over priced, especially if the same clothes are hanging in the shops for weeks.

When I split with wife the ladies who worked there had a box and anything new housey went into it for me to look at.

I forgot my watch one day, bought one for £3with box.. Box got thrown... Went online some time later and found out worth £300!

And I bought a Paul Smith suit BNWT and later discovered it was £500 new.. I paid £25 at half price because it hadn't sold yet

90% of wardrobe is charity shop clothing and labels!

As someone who has donated and been a volunteer for 30 years and know all about the rubbish of cold calling, hiring of outside Agency paid staff getting a cut of your donations and many well known household names are happy to take your generous donations while keeping quiet who takes there cut before whatever is left filters down to the charity, i laughed when i two little old ladies saying on a bus years ago 'the stuff in the charity shops is too expensive' so OK it is second hand your getting it at a massively reduced price and it's still TOO expensive. Charities and there shops have overheads to pay you find some good stuff and some rubbish but there not 'penny emporiums'.

Some charity shops are too expensive!! These items are donated!! 100% profit!!

Cut the overheads, stop doing up the shops so they look like boutiques. Stop with the fancy advertising.

I was talking to the manager of one of my local charity shops the other week. I asked him how he manages to keep the prices so low. He told me, if it doesn't sell then they bag it up and have to PAY to have it disposed of!!!! Better to keep the prices low and have the stock moving than to have to pay to have it taken away. I very rarely see the same stock in there on a weekly basis.

I, Miss C, has a friend who gets anmazing bargains, clothes, shoes, bags etc. But I neber find anything really. And being a bigger girl i always struggle with sizes. Would LOVE to go to a charity shop in a 'posh' area. Loads of celebrities etc donate clothes etc to charity shops. Miss C. Xx

The best thing i found in 1 wos a large un opend air fix modall kit of hms victory.

I got it for £5 but the kit new wos worth £50

When I was a charity shop manager we had weekly collections of all disposed of stock due to it not being sold or unfit to sell... All items were turned into industrial cleaning materials, car soundproofing etc... Nothing skimmed off and sent abroad by company we used... And for that we got paid for everything we sent bringing in extra money.

All cardboard and books were taken to local swimming pool which collected to raise funds too... Very little was wasted...

Depending on the shop there are overheads, wages are paid for some staff, especially if a large amount of projects are dealt with in house ie. Lunch groups, local transport, day trips... rent has to be paid, so do electric bills... As for boutique looking shops... Same people that complain about this also complained about the smell and jumble sale look of charity shops in past... Also with most high streets dying slowly every shop has to attract customers and if it looks nice people are more likely to shop there.

Pricing.... Well just because it's a charity shop doesn't make it that everything should be cheap..there is a balance.. If it's an expensive label it should be priced to bring the most you can get for it...the shop I used to work in is still using pricing guidelines I set in place 5 years after I left, as I was told 'it's simple, common sense and works'. Some people would quite happily pay double for something on ebay but then complain about the price of same item in a charity shop... Believe me I have had similar conversations on this subject many times... Above all support your charity shops however you can, as for some of the smaller ones it will be the majority of their income
