It's a logic/reasoning puzzle, more than plain maths.

There's a pattern that you need to find and then it makes sense and you arrive at the number 40.

"According to Brain Dare, the solution is 96. Here’s how they worked it out.

Their solution involves introducing multiplication into the mix. First, you multiply the first number by the second number. Then, you simply add the product of those two numbers to the first number. Like so:

1 + (1 x 4) = 5

2 + (2 x 5) = 12

3 + (3 x 6) = 21

8 + (8 x 11) = 96

However, if you did manage to work out a solution for the sum yourself, there’s a fair chance you came to the answer 40 instead. Here's how you come to that answer:

1 + 4 = 5

2 + 5 + 5 = 12

3 + 6 + 12 = 21

8 + 11 + 21 = 40

Of course, there’s no right or wrong answer, even if there is an “official” correct solution."

This is according to the guys who posted it in the first place

I realize that but these things are also designed to be ambiguous - they contain too little information to determine the pattern. There are multiple potential solutions.

The purpose is not to see who can find out the answer.... the purpose is to generate column inches of internet comments and debate about something of which there can be no one answer.

Sorry to spoil the fun

Up on them there hills

Okay:

X=Y

So 1X=1Y

Therefore 2X=2Y

So 1X-1Y= 2X-2Y

Which could be represented as

1(X-Y) = 2(X-Y)

If you divide the X & Y's out

You have 1=2(X-Y) / (X-Y)

Which results in 1=2

So with this formulae, it might explain some ages on this site....

7+10+59 is 76

8+11+76 is 95 "

there was no mention of any 4+7. After 3+6+12 is 21 it then goes 8+11 so 8+11+21 is 40.
