It's nothing to do with how "tight" or "loose" you are, it's more about how stretchy you are, your muscle control. So those guys are probably talking shite because telling a woman she's ooh so tight is an easy compliment.

I've managed it a couple of times. Relaxed, slow, steady, plenty of lube and being in the right frame of mind makes it possible. In those rare circumstances I happen to like it. As for the whole it causes a permanent change thing then those people obviously lack understanding of how the vagina actually works. Even a slight variation in size can be significant when you are literally stretched to the limit.

For your initial attempts I would recommend you pick a slimmer hand if you have the option. Some people's hands are too thick set, half the time I have to bail (at four fingers/knuckles stage) as it's too painful - though the women's hands have always fit!
