Surrey to increase 15% in council tax.

On the news they said that the people of surrey will be asked if they want their council tax to increase to 15% and they will do a referendum of it, as they have to find savings, what is your view of the robin hood tax? It is about social care and to protect it. Many of the ones they interviewed do not want it.

surrey pays more c tax than a lot of london council tax areas and they want more ..... i dont have good roads,street lighting , never see street cleaning , and get the licra louts trying to rule the roads weekend so why a 15% rise

Central

If central government cuts funding paid to councils - as of course is happening - then councils are faced with cutting costs, services or raising money in other ways. I don't know Surrey's service levels but know that cuts over recent years have generally resulted in councils slashing £millions from their spending on services, as well as reducing their costs. We have 'postcode lotteries' on many services here in the UK, with radically different levels of service standards. Wealthier areas are potentially more able to generate income from locals but it does mean that the poorer residents will be forced to pay more, when these are the very people who have suffered the most, with losses financially over recent years as well as experiencing many of the services that they depend upon being cut.

I'm generally in favour of essential services being maintained but what I define as 'essential' will differ from others - it likely includes many things that others could see as optional or luxuries. It generally should mean that those who are more able to afford to pay should stand more of the burden for supporting them.

much more context on it that that shags...

the government said that local councils this year were allowed after a long freeze to raise council tax by 2%

they then said they were allowed to raise increases on council tax from 2% to 5% if that 3% specifically went on social care (of which central govt have been taking more and more money away...)

they then said if a council wanted to raise it by more than that, then it would have to go to a local referendum...

surrey county council are saying the government had cut its annual grant by £170m since 2010

the interesting thing here... surrey county council in conservative run.... and the tory mps in the county are split for/against the increase......

That is right and it was for social care, many did say no when they interviewed them, it would cost them £200 more a year.

The majority of Tory voters in Surrey are so well off as to not be entitled to any council provided social care so will not give a **** and vote no.

Since Surrey is a resoundingly Tory county the Council know which way any vote will go. This is just a stunt so they can cast the blame on to the electorate to stop the bad press over their repated cuts.
