It's not great. But it can save your life, so just put up with the discomfort for five minutes.

Had my first one last week. I went in full of dread as I've had more people up my foof than that over Christmas and not in a good way (miscarriage and people looking up there quite a lot in a&e as I was really ill.)

But its was absolutely fine. No pain at all. Literally lie there, tiny speculum (think run away from your meet cos its that small) a quick swab, wipe up and your done. No need to worry at all.

If you relax, it's really not that bad. Just stay calm and don't stress over it (easier said than done). I think even if it does hurt, a few seconds of discomfort will be worth it.

It's absolutely fine OP, don't worry about it, it's over in a matter of seconds. I always think we are so lucky in this country to be able to have these important tests for free. Relax, deep breathing, and it will be done before you know it.

It should not be painful.

I found that they assumed that using a speculum for older women was an incorrect assumption. They do come in different sizes!

So if you are tight, for example, the one for 'teens' would be best.

It saves lives though so it is essential xx

it's not exactly a treat,but it's rarely painful...may help to take a couple of paracetemol half an hour before...good luck!

I don't find it painful at all, can be sometimes just a little uncomfortable, but no need to worry. Close your eyes and focus on relaxing breathing and you'll be fine.

I haven't found them painful, just a bit awkward. Try not to accidentally shoot the speculum back out as that can be embarrassing

It shouldn't be painful.. It can be a little uncomfortable with the speculum.

Try and relax it doesn't take long.

Tell the doctor or nurse your nervous they will understand.

It could well save your life...

Nothing to worry about. Relax. You'll get them every theee years. Lucky me I get them every 6 months.glad they are keeping an eye on me. So I've had plenty ! I've had treatment before. Years ago. Wish they would lower the age in England as scotlands age is lower !

I had my first one age 38 just last year. My doctor performed it and even let me put the spec in myself. The weirdest part was her moving it around to get a good view..The actual smear I hardly felt. I have no fear to go again now.

I wouldn't describe any part of it as painful.

Depending on how your cervix lays, it may help to put your hands under your lower back. This tilts you into the right position, and it shouldn't hurt. Good luck

chuckles..thats what goes through my mind too...lolol

op its fine, 30secs and its done, i dont find them painful, just focus on counting to 30 and dont ask to take the speculum home (ive thought of doing this too.but havent the balls )

You will be fine.

You will feel a little scratch. That can be a little painful but it goes away quickly.

Sometimes they ask you to cough to distract you from the scratch.

You may have a few drops of blood after it during the day. But this should stop the day after, if it doesn't see your nurse again.

And it may sound silly but avoid unprotected sex before going

And as others have said, it can save your life.

It was uncomfortable rather than painful; was slightly embarrassing because of the position but I go every time as it could save my life. Same with breast screening; the 'torture vice' is not something I desire but better than having a breast removed, or worse, because of late diagnosed Cancer

It doesn't hurt either. Relaxing is better for you anyway. The darn things can be cold though

My daughter has got to go for her first one and she nervous and embarrassed about going. At one point even decided not to go. That is until I reminded her that she had to because of all what I have gone through and I I not I probably would be here now. Thankfully She has changed her mind and I have explained what they do etc. You will be fine honestly. Drop your dignity off st the door and puck it up on your way out is what I say

My most recent one the nurse couldn't get the speculum in position and shoved it a bit (she did warn me ) that was a bit uncomfortable but not awful .

I had one Wednesday (had one previously too) and I could tell by the way the nurse was talking to me that people normally fret and panic . I told her there was no need to try and calm me as I completely understood the procedure etc but I know other people worry

My 1st smear at 18 I was straight in for an op. I never made it more than a year with out having yo have a smear and up till last year had 12 years of colposcopy's every 6/12 months plus various op's over that time.

I obviously highly advise anyone to go for their smear the possibility of a bit of discomfort or cramping after is worth it to get an all clear after.

You poor thing !!! My smear his time found borderline abnormalities but she didn't find anything on the colposcopy so just have to go for another smear in 6 months but at the hospital rather than doctors .

I think the discomfort can depend on how good the person doing the smear is. I've had quite painful ones and ones that I didn't feel at all.
