little house on the praire

Why do you like living in the cityor countryside.

Im a country girl although live in a small market town. I would say my favourite things are knowing everyone(although this can be disadvantagous as well). Walk a mile each way to middle of the country, lambs and now calves in the fields. Strawberry picking, blackberrying. Never having bought a stick of rhubard. Peace and quite and low crime rate.

Disadvantages are no cinema or bowling or anything like that, only a few pubs and have to go 25 miles for a decent night out. No high street shops apart from wilkinsons and boots. Things do tend to cost more as the clothes shops are boutiques.

Best advantage. No bloody mcdonalds for miles

lol

I loved living in the country - miss my open fire, beautiful views, fresh air, quietness, everyone saying hello, lovely country pubs you could walk home from at closing time without fear. - Had great babysitters as theres nothing for an 18yr old to do lol

But downside - always having to travel to buy a decent pair of shoes!! And anyone who thinks its quiet at night - try herds of cows or sheep passing your window in the middle of the night, then theres the owls, rabbits thumping, foxes lol

oh I miss it

We have the best of both worlds, we live literally on the edge of a city with rolling countryside on the doorstep.

Gateshead is a pretty big town but we're not that far from the countryside or the seaside. Then there's the Tyne river and I've been toying with the idea of getting a small boat to mess around with. My parents live in a quaint little village down south and there are two pubs within 100 metres. I'd like to live in a village when we retire as I see no benefit of living in a busy town.

I thought I was ready to move back to a quieter life but I'm not.

I love the buzz of the city. I'm lucky to live in Edinburgh so there's all the architecture and things happening all year round. It's small enough that you can walk everywhere and always bump into people you know.

Timely thread. Spent 35 years living in Birmingham and the last few living in London. I am always torn. I love the city, the buzz and the hustle and bustle but also love the quiet of the countryside for walking and cycling. I have just got a new job in Hertfordshire and will be moving out that way in the next few months. Will be interesting to see what it will be like living in a smaller town.

Country, but that has a lot to do with having kids.My boys can play in the wood, wander through fields, dam streams, ride bikes. We leave our doors unlocked and our windows open.A genuine community where ppl look out for each other.Add excellent schools and breath taking views and i am more than willing to put up with 2 miles to the village shop and one bus a day.

i have lived in London and Taipei, both vibrant cities, fab in my 20's but not for me now.

The Forest

The beautiful area we live in is known as "where the forest meets the sea", and it's a short ferry ride across the water to Southampton shops.

Beat that!

near the sounds of the wimborne quarter jack!

Another country dweller here but it`s the house I was born in so I haven`t had to try living in a town. There`s good and bad to living where I am. It was never really quiet, the tractors that used to keeping the dairy cows fed and watered have now been replaced with the Natzi Trust workers wizzing around and of the grockles who can`t find the Natzi Trust house nearby! At least the demise of the dairy herds mean we don`t have the cow shit flies of the smell when they empty the slurry lagoons! We daren`t leave our doors open because the pikeys see our street as their property We only have one bus a week and the nearest shopping is 2 miles away but it`s not brilliant. You have to go the 6 or so miles to Poole for that.

I have lived in my village all my life (my dad built the house I live in). Can't beat it, lovely views of the surrounding countryside & on the whole quiet & peaceful. Can walk to Derby city centre in an hour, so convenient for the best of both worlds.

My ancestors built the Glasgow city centre building I live in.

Without it, and the revenue generated from the tenants on the lower floors, I wouldn't be able to have a but n ben up where Scotland gets a bit lumpy and a hole in the water lying at Kip.

That is what many deluded country folk call the National Trust, what they cannot give you is an educated answer when you ask them what alternatives there are to save these large country houses and historic estates from wrack and ruin.

They also dislike 'grockles'...even though the countryside and many of it's villages would be bankrupt without the money and jobs holidaymakers and visitors bring into rural areas.

In short....they lead a life of delusion.

i live right on the edge of manchester city centre. its great for concerts and meeting friends living so close, but over the last few weeks there have major events that have closed down large portions of the city whilst it filled with day-trippers, athletes and football parades!

for now i'm happy being where I am and have a great view of the city from my window, but i think there will come a time when i will seek tranquility. i would love to live by the sea with a couple of dogs.
