That's very useful for the ladies when trying to chat and receiving 100's of messages.

They can go to send one's and read the conversation string which shows the newest unread one's from the person they were chatting with without having to look for it.

The blue dot. I don't chat to loads of people since I have filters on so I always feel guilty for not responding to messages when I'm online. It's not personal; sometimes I am just not in the mood for a PM conversation there and then. But knowing they can see you've logged in puts pressure on to respond immediately.
