shaming someone for the body they have, any body at all.

yes you can lose wieght, or put it on, or gain muscle, but the person might already be trying to change their shape or not want to and are happy with what they look like.

if you criticise their body then you are shaming them for what they are physically right now.

Women in the public eye are often subject to body shaming, men are too but less so. Spend some time in the forum and see people putting one body type down in an attempt to flatter another.

I have an overweight friend who thinks it's ok to call me a skinny cow and put posts on Facebook saying only bigger women can give proper cuddles. Poor Scarlett Moffat was criticised in the media for being too big, now she's being criticised for being to slim...can't win.

However almost daily someone on fab says they rate personality over looks.

Confused?

So can we say the best way to deal with it is to be comfortable in your own skin and not care what other people think. I think a lot of people are dealing with insecurities but you have to develop the power to ignore what people think because the world is a very nasty place. The best way is not caring which is damn near a super power

easy enough when one or two people that you don't give a shit about say that you are physically wrong.

but when society tells you that you are physically wrong, and loads of people back that up...maybe even you've been abused by someone you care about, then it's harder.

I don't think that one is body shaming. IMO, body shaming is more direct. Having a preference and stating it isn't really an insult to neglected body types.

It's not even as simple as that. In the Victorian era women wore clothing to make it look like their bottoms were bigger than they actually were. The hour glass shape of women was held in high esteem. Now "fashion" dictates that our women have the bodies of 14 year old boys.

At the end of the day its your body and it's no one else's business how it looks except your own.

"What is body shaming ?"

It's the current arsebook goto phrase for something that people have done since speach evolved. Criticism of a person's body, often a group in general, at its worst it's often their own body, worst because there is no defence when you are not happy with your own skin and bones.

But in that case it IS an insult to a body type that's the problem. It's the fact an insult has been used as the way of expressing the preference, rather than the preference itself. Having a preference and stating it would be "I have a preference for big women", in your example.

Unfortunately the do doll. As people have mentioned, these me memes and phrases about real men preferring a real woman, not bones are hurtful.

I have seen the phrased 'skinny cow' and 'twiggy women' etc being thrown around on fab in defense of larger women.

Hardly Fair. You will see alot of nit in arguments about size but it seems to be more acceptable than 'fat' shaming.

I object to this comment. How rude!

Not everyone uses steroids and most fitness people are very aware of their overall health. They work hard to acjeive their goals, thwu sacrifice alot to reach their goala and yes they will have their insecurities too. Which you have just targeted for your own self purpose.

Another example of body shaming and how it seems to be acceptable to body shame certain body types.

That's what makes me sad.

not sure, luckily i tend not to associate with people like that.

i saw 2 'news' stories last week about women who had lost weight. both showed before and after pics.

one woman was just slim after, loads of nice comments about her before and after pics, many saying they preferred her fat but nothing horrible about her appearance either way.

2nd one the woman had gone from obese to athletic. never seen so many horrible, judgemental comments slagging off her now appearance, saying she was too mucular, looked like a man (she didn't), and all the comments were from fat and obese women. it was really sad to see.

Hey Tushy!

Well if he was then that's ok ha ha.

It's a sore spot for me as I regularly have people telling me to my face how muscular women are disgusting, I won't be a real woman if I gain the muscle mass I want etc. All whilst wearing a very disapproving and disgusted expression.

They would never say that to a woman who is overweight so it niggles at me.

Body shaming as a term is a new concept we all grew up being called names like fatty or ginger or skinny etc etc but it has become a trigger for people so they can feel justified in some circumstances in maintaining an unhealthy lifestyle, while I have no problem personally with anybodys choices some people need to see that some choices will lead to severe problems and being "body shamed" may actually be a godsend.

You think?

To a large extent I agree with Mrs Nicecouple on this issue! Nowadays, and particularly on fab, the big is beautiful message is put out into the world more than ever before - had anyone heard the term BBW 20 years ago?

Now - I don't have a personal issue with anyone's body shape and certainly don't feel the need to publicly insult them for it (it's between them and their doctor if there are medical implications to their weight) however - on fab in particular slim ladies are often put down (NB// - I don't class myself as slim!) by being called 'sticks' or observations like 'real men like women with meat on their bones etc!

Also any 'slim appreciation' thread is immediately labelled as being 'unnecessary because society/the media brainwashes us into believing that slim is beautiful ' - so we have BBW thread no 70 and no alternative thread for women of other body types!

As I said - I have ZERO problem with men or women of any shape, height, colour, age or size being appreciated on here - but some balance would be nice occasionally! I'm digressing but I hope you get my point - body shaming works both ways and is wrong either way!

My comments are based on personal experiences growing up, it seems people are happy to have a pop at anyone regardless of their body if it's just different to what they are personally, like you, I've no issues with body size etc but I think the media have played a big part in today's society as to was is "normal" and what isn't.
