Organic gardening/allotment

Anyone like gardening or growing food? Just got an allotment beside my dad.

I love gardening although i find it physically difficult now.

We grow some fruit and veg, we have apple and pear trees and some soft fruit bushes too plus strawberries. We also grow runner beans, courgettes and tomatoes in pots on the patio. We used to grow far more but are unable to grow so much now.

Yep. My job is ing though. I'm better at destroying than nurturing so the gardening/fruit and veg growing roles are allocated accordingly!

Im going to be building a sub irrigated raised bed in my garden come spring.

Should do for a few vegies and lettuce etc.

Thinking of trying the Air pots potsto pot for some carrots/potatoes

Herb garden in a container is already set up for the patio.

I've never had much luck with potatoes in containers, they only seem to produce a very small amount. Salad leaves in old gutters worked very well though, as does beetroot if you want the little golf ball sized ones.

l watched a seminar on air pruning; lt was a revelation. Tried it over the winter with strawberries and the the ones with the air pruned root are doing the best by far.

Me and my housemate have an allotment. One of the most rewarding things ever. I recommend making friends with the other allotment goers, many of them have had their spaces for years, they know everything!

We have quite a big garden and use half for growing veg,runner beans are always prolific,last season we grew some hamburg parsley a great dual veg,you can eat the tops and root,sort of a parsnip,we use seed parade online seeds,cheap and reliable seeds

I would love an allotment - it costs so much for organic fruit and veggies and the satisfaction of growing your own must be fab!

I'm definitely going to look into it.

Someone I went to school with has an allotment and the amount of stuff he grows there is amazing.

He recently got some chickens as well. Puts in a lot of work but it definitely looks rewarding

l love it too. l made friend with an old guy called Jim. He taught me how to make good leaf compost and getting calcium in it by adding egg shells.

l'm exited for the new season with the new air pruning root system knowledge l acquired. l've got a new variety of pink blueberries called Pink Lemonade. Twice the sugar content of regular blues

Yep hard at work everyday, now is the time to get all kinds of muck on the land, then end of Feb when it's all rotted down get the rotovator out to mix it all in in then late March get planting.

yes I,ve grown them in sacks just adding the compost as they grow and remembering to water them when required before the wilt stage.

Same here, have done quite well growing potatoes in bags/sacks and never buy supermarket courgettes, so limp and watery

Youd never actuslly get organic food from an allotment though.

Not unleess youre gonna clean it up and leave it fallow for 7 years iirc and then make sure noone else on the feildd uses anything.

Im thinkibg if doing strawberries in doors now i have a bit of a conservatory.

I'm really big for local sustainable seasonal produce. I don't really thing anything tastes better! It's important people use local produce with the money going back into their communities. A lot of allotments by me sell veg baskets etc. I grow a small amount of bits and pieces.

yes grown stuff all my life, had normal and permaculture set ups before, with and without livestock..

bill mollison books are awesome for permaculture.. easy to understand for big or small set ups if interested x
