Replace sending an actual birthday card from family & friends?? Finding it quite sad on my birthday today.

3 cards and 1 of those is from our dog and loads of Facebook messages.

Prefer an actual card myself.

What do you prefer??

Tight arses, i would buy you a card i like buying cards, most of my family and friends send cards only we dont bother buying gifts. my sister in law sends an email saying merry xmas which i ignore.

On my birthday my family sends cards but all of my friends send emails (they used to call before I moved here). To be honest I prefer the phone calls/emails because they are more personal than the cards.

I'm not on social media so my friends can't be lazy and send me a Facebook message - forced conversation is the way to go

So do we. We spend a fair amount of time choosing the right card with nice words in it too

I'm curious....I can understand why three words on social media isn't really desirable as a happy birthday message. But, why would you prefer a card with someone else's prefabricated message over an email written by a friend in their own words? I'm really just curious because I never found cards all that special (unless someone takes the time to write their own message inside, which I find they rarely do beyond a few extra words).

If someone wants to wish me a happy birthday then I really don't give a shit if it's via text, phone call, card or on social media. The card will just end up in the bin after a few days anyway.

Throughout the year I take pictures of my family and friends. I then send them a moonpig card with pictures of themselves on a personalised card.

With moonpig you can even upload your signature so they get a signed card.

I like getting cards, but it's nice being remembered, even if they have to be reminded via social media.

Quite a few family and friends now donate the money they would have spent on cards to charity. Instead wish a happy thingy on social media.

For me family and good friends get a card

I personally feel that it means people have thought about it in advance. With social media it pops up on the day to remind you so you then think "oh yeah. Better write something " No forethought

I like to send and receive cards but whatever way others choose to send. Irthday messages is fine by me. I also send lots of birthday greetings to people via social media who I would never have bought a card for. So both have their place for me.

I was pissed off this Christmas cos I used to always phone my family at Christmas instead of send cards. But this year I had a little spare money so I want out n choose 3 special cards n posted them off. Still waiting for a thank you.....then my mother had the adasaty to complaint that she didn't get a present! Xxx

Generic printed message

From sender

I'd rather have more trees standing on this planet of ours than get a card like that. However if there's a personal message, even a few thoughtful or funny words I'm happy to get that card.

I stopped celebrating at 40 and told people so, its just another day. H & kids make me ones themselves though and ueah get loads of FB messages, nice when they are personal and from family friends dotted around the world.

Might be doing something this year though as its a little special. Maybe a w/e at VA

We said this at Christmas. So many less cards this year. I think it's just the inevitable changing of times. Like with all things, they come and go and then come back in again.

Writing actual letters and owning stationary is making a big come back, at the moment.

My best ever social one was from my cousin who was a teacher in the back & beyond in Cambodia. Special because we hadn't spoken for five years since he went and he had to walk six miles to get on the net & we chatted for an hour or so. That was on my 50th. He never has come home & is now teaching in Vietnam & contact is much easier.

me and my sister in law keep the nicest cards, put them up every year on our birthday and christmas.

I get pissy if someone dares to send a text message instead of a card. I mean, you could even go down to the nearest beach and scrawl HAPPY BIRTHDAY JOE!!!, take a photo and send it to me and I'd be happy with that, but a TXT??!!

i don't care a jot. it's a bit of card,i'm happiest when i get none.

i work on my birthday usually and it passes nice and quietly without mention, just the way i like it. i don't like marking the passing of time to my own inevitable mortality.

I noticed this over Christmas, as I visited family there seemed to be half as many cards compared to previous years.

You also have an increase in the people donating to charity instead of buying cards.
