My cat is very old, about 16/17 now and recently he has taken to pissing in the house. When I am here I chuck him out now and then as he sleeps a lot and doesn't go out much but I don't want to lock him out in this cold weather while I'm at work as it doesn't seem fair.

I'm not over joked at the thought of having a litter tray but I think it's the next logical step

Ahh no... ours did this. Have you taken them to the vets recently to check kidney function?

He might need his kidney function checked out. You can buy covered litter trays - we have an indoor one and they don't stink as bad as the open ones.

I've got a litter tray for luna pants as she's an indoor cat. I use smartprice clumping clay n empty it daily unless she has a poo. I also use poundland litter tray liners n have it in my bathroom by my toilet. We often have poos togther.

also have an air freshner on my bathroom cabinet. No one has ever told me my flat smells of cat pee. Xxx

I have a tray with a lid in the utility room and use scented Felipure and there's never any smell. But if she's getting caught short I would definitely get kidney function checked.

I,d say vet check, could just be old age or could be kidneys. A covered litter tray is definitely better. XXX

Not just kidney but urinary tract infection. Quick course of antibiotics in order as a first step.

Trouble is vets like doing loads of unnecessary tests which are useless for an old animal, and even worse, trying to persuade you to let them operate on conditions when sadly it would be better to have them put to sleep

Inappropriate urinating by cats can be a sign of serious illness. They can get cystitis and sometimes struvite crystals in the urine can cause a blockage in the bladder which can be fatal if untreated. Its not too bad for female cats but for males because of their anatomy it can be life threatening.

One of my cats has been on treatment for this since Christmas day. He has had it several times before so ee always have some of the medication at home to start treatment immediately before he goes to the vets.

I would strongly recommend taking your cat for a check up.

I am going to get him booked in. When he goes its a massive long wee like he's been holding it for ages (although I don't know how long a normal cat wee lasts lol)

He isn't straining or in pain etc.

It doesn't sound like cystitis then. The early symptoms of that are trying to pee frequently and licking around their "bits" a lot.

It sounds like he is just holding it because he doesn't want to go outside but the vet will advise.

We had a very elderly cat, nearly 21 when she died. We always had a litter tray but she chose to go outside. The last couple of years before she died she decided she didn't want to go out to toilet anymore and started using the litter tray instead.

If your cat has peed in the house you need to clean it with an enzyme based cleaner. Even if it looks and smells clean to you the cat can still smell it and will go back to the same place again. You can buy special cleaning stuff or use biological washing powder instead, it will do the same job.
