we have no hdmi port on the desktop and have been told a video card is needed,but it does have a dvi port,will a dvi to hdmi cable do the job?

If it's a dvi out port then yes, a dvi to hdmi will work.

I have a dvi out from my computer to a hdmi in to my screen

you can get a hdmi to dvi lead but there will be no sound

Have you got a displayport? That does the same thing as a hdmi port. Usually abbreviated dp which may cause confusion here

You would need to get a DVI to HDMI lead that also included a 3.5mm Audio Jack at the DVI end to connect to your sound card.

Pretty sure they are available

You need an HDMI Male to VGA Male Video Converter lead (about £3.50 on ebay), and an HDMI splitter (£6 ebay) if you want the pc monitor and the tv on at the same time.
