Walked into town and back today, a total of 10 miles.

Marathon training starts this week although I am feeling completely overwhelmed by it all and haven't really settled on a plan at all yet. Just going to run and run lol

I've never used a plan and never will. Just think about the long run and increase the distance gradually, mix up the rest of it with some hills and speed work and you'll be fine

thank you, that really does help a lot. all of my facebook feed is full of people on plans posting their tempo runs etc and i have no clue what they are lol

I wouldn't personally buy a fitbit, not even the more "smart watch" ones

You're better buying a dedicated running watch like a Garmon or Tom Tom as they're more accurate.

IF you really need one, that is

You're better sticking with a dedicated app on your phone, like Nike+, adidas micoach, strava or Endonondo

I have never found apps to be that accurate with the GPS etc as they have too much other stuff going on inside them.

I have a Tomtom runner 2 which is a multi sport watch and I love it. Tracking my activities motivates me so much as I am just simpering with myself. Sadly I can't wear it at work as I'd like to see my daily steps etc. The Tomtom mysports platform uploads to Strava and you can get loads of support on there.

Couch to 5k is a great plan. It's where I started. Just remember you don't have to run like mo or ussain.... Just go at your own pace. The more you do it the quicker you will get x

I really lost my running last year, so this year I'm back concentrating on it.

My 'plan' is to run for 20 minutes every morning. 10 minutes up the road in a straight line, 10 minutes back. Eventually I will get further.

That combined with park run when I'm not working and 1 long wood/beach run a week, I'll hopefully be back to half marathon standard again.

This does help the couch to 5km - I had never run more than a mile (1.6km) before I done this. I used to run at football but it was always stop start

I would say make sure you do stretching as that is my killer as I always forget to do it and calves end up killing me

I haven't done a 5km for about 6 weeks. My advice would be to work to get to a pace of 6min a km - so 2.5km for in 15min then step it up to 18mins for 3km and 21 km for 3.5 as this gets you used to pace

For me it takes me about 3/4 runs of 20 mins to get back to running 5km pace - today I done just over 22 min for 3km pace but I will get back into swing ofmit

There are different races going on within in a race like the London marathon. You have the elites who will finish sub 2hr 15mins, then the club championship runners sub 2hrs 45mins, then Good for age runners sub 3hrs 05mins if under 40 for men, then general public(anything else).

To have a time target is a good training motivation. I wouldn't have trained as hard as i did on my first marathon if i hadn't of had a time in my mind i wanted to run. I found it helped me get out of the door when it would be easy just to skip a run when it's cold and dark.

I'm going to try and complete all of the RunWales events this year, a mix of 10k, 10 mile and half marathon distances, mainly across N Wales

Plus there's the Chester 1/2 marathon in May, which is my "annual" event

You'll be fine - someone I follow on Twitter finished in that sort of time but walked most of it. As long as you can keep up a trot you'll be fine

Unless you have very good natural talent(rare), most people struggle with running at first. The improvements come with doing it regularly over a period of time and challenging your body with different paces.

Have a time target you would like to do for your marathon, write it down on a piece of paper, and keep looking at it as motivation before you go off on a training run. Don't dwell on what your fitness is now, but what it will be in 4 months time when you have done the training. Good luck.

I'm just back from the physio who did a bit of acupuncture on me. Hopefully 2017 is the year I get back to longer distances and shake off my annoying niggle (piriformis). First run of new year tomorrow. Always up for meeting south Brum runners of either sex.

Run between a pair of lamp posts, then walk for the next 5 or so, and repeat.

It's easy enough if you set small targets like this, it can be a random set of things, park benches, litter bins etc.

Each week you'll get further, and find you can do more

The first marathon I entered I didn't start because I let myself get psyched out by what other people were doing. It is very easy to overcomplicate things.

Increase you long run by a mile a week. Do a couple of other runs a week mixing in hills and a bit of speed, remember to have the odd easy week (something most plans don't schedule) and you'll be fine.

Well done man. Keep up your intervals and try some hill repeats. Put quality into these speed sessions and keep all other sessions easy. I went from 18.50 to 16.15 in 8 weeks of consistent interval training every week and got my 10k fown to 34.42 which I was really targeting.

Cheers...but i just can't get under 19, need a new training strategy and to do more speed and hillwork i think. Everyones goal is relative though...i have so much respect for those just starting a coach to 5k programme cos i know how tough running can be...

Cheers mate. I might PM you for some advice. I have been stuck at this for a long while..i think part of my problems is i have maybe not been recovering enough and i seem to do all of my runs hard. MIght increase the distance of my weekend run and just take it really really easy...also on my non running days i strength train..so maybe i am not fully recovered. Will play around with it this year

I did the Cardiff World Half Marathon championships last year. Mo was in the elite field. It took about ten minutes for our wave to get to the start line. At that point Mo was 2 and a bit miles down the road

More rest would almost certainly see some gains. As would interval training. Failing that ParkRun tourism to any flat and fast local courses is the way!

I was watching VLM at mile 6 last year and the lead group came through at a pace roughly the same as my sprint!

Most run tracking apps will track time, distance, pace and also elevation gain. The more elevation gain the hillier the run was. I call it climbing for short - climbing up hills."

It's something I've started to do in the last 12 months. During a half marathon, I get to 9 miles and then up the pace for a mile. If it still feels ok I keep going for the next.

It's something I've started to do in the last 12 months. During a half marathon, I get to 9 miles and then up the pace for a mile. If it still feels ok I keep going for the next.

Got to temper my enthusiasm

I'm always conscious of it, and know I should slow myself down, but find that hard to do

Just find them incredibly boring really. Running 4 miles and not getting anywhere just isn't for me.

Much rather head up on to the coast path or out into some country lanes.

I use a treadmill for intervals otherwise I don't push myself enough. But otherwise I dislike them. I find I can run a lot further on a treadmill than outside, so I just feel like I'm cheating.

Day 3 of Couch to 10k done today.

I gave up on the 20 minutes of running idea when I realised that meant getting up at 4.40am on a work day.

As one who pretty much hated running in the past as I find it boring I started using a treadmill for the distraction the gym provides with music, TV and ladies in lycra. I had to regularly pass a beep test for work and found it a good way to train and maintain a higher level than I needed. Funny thing is even though I don't need to do it anymore I still go a few times a week and fret if I have to miss a session.

Dreadmills have their place in any training schedule

Far better to put a run in, in the warmth and comfort of a gym than to miss your schedule because there's a thunderstorm outside

I also liked it because of the lower impact on my knees after surgery, and also that I could control speed intervals better

2nd week of marathon training and another 18 miles done. Need to start stepping it up big time.

I ended up seeing a podiatrist but a decent shop should be able to do it. If there is a sweatshop nearby you could try there.

And you never need an excuse for new trainers. I don't anyway

Shin splints can often occur through over training too, especially if you're just starting out

Going to a "decent" running shop that has a treadmill and performs gait analysis is the way to find out if you have any underlying problems with your running style, and advice for proper fitting of a type of shoe that would best suit you

Try on lots of pairs and not just the first that they offer you

I used to get shin splints when I first started running. Had a gait analysis done and bought trainers with higher arches, don't get them now.

Had my running technique analysed using some simple software and a treadmill. Led to me buying particular shoes that supported my style / feet placement better and transformed my running...less insures and less pain!

Sweatshop can be hit and miss so worth researching. The one nearest me is staffed by uninterested teens, if I need anything from their store I drive best part of an hour to Milton Keynes. Runners Need are also good

For recording runs? I love Strava but I have a running watch that syncs to it rather than running with my phone. Sometimes the GPS on phones isn't that reliable. Often when I have used a phone I've dashed across a field at lightening speed in the middle of a run lol

I've always used adidas micoach

All of the features including training plans are free, unlike a lot of others which offer "premium" services

It's always kept a good and accurate track for me.

It's downside is that it isn't androidwear compatible yet ....

I'm also doubling up my taking with Endomondo as a comparison, because that is AW compatible. ... but I'm finding that the tracking on that, and its metrics, aren't as accurate

So I've joined a gym and with Snowdon Trail in mind am working at stimulating hill work (there are no hills in my corner of Hertfordshire) on the stepper and on the moving staircase thing. It is safe to say after 3 weeks I hate both these machines with a passion!

I hate 10km, least favourite distance by far. 5km's are easy; just run them on the verge of puking. Halves are at a steady but hard pace and if I pave it right it's only the last few miles that hurt but neither strategy work for a 10!

Hobbled around 1.5 miles last night. My first time out since being knocked off my bike. The Doc will go schitz at me, feet, knee and hip aching like a mofo, but grinning like a lunatic still. Oh how I have missed running in the rain and the endorphins. Yes I did look like the proverbial fat knacker shuffling down the street but I am already planning my route incremental increases. I reckon my body might be broken so I can't make it any worse by running and the rush is good.

I had major knee surgery 5 years ago- had to have a bone graft to fuse a split kneecap (not caused by running).

The relief to be able to run again was amazing

Did a lunchtime 6.5km averaging 6:10 /km so happy bunny, best time this year. Should be even better by May an the night 1/2 marathon I'm signed up for.

Takes all my time, can take a lot out of you as well. Did my first full marathon in Edinburgh last May and I said never again, a year later Manchester in April and Stirling in May.

All I do think about is running, but crossing that line after weeks of training it all pays of

This week is a 'rest' week where I don't do a massive long run. Feels weird not to be running today lol

They're a great club who run out of Birch wood, and organise one of the best 10k of the year

Local 10km today. 51.41 and finished in the first third so pretty happy with that on a lumpy course. I fucking hate 10kms, this didn't change that opinion!

Organisers ran out of medals, there's a woman who does my local park run in 50+ minutes, always last, always smiling and always trying so hars. She was running today and struggling to meet the 2 hour cut. Gave my medal back to he

the organisers so she got one crossing the line rather than have one posted to her. And got rewarded with a race entry for a triathlon...

I learnt to love 10km races

I bust a gut when trying to do a 5km and I'm good for nothing afterwards

10km is all about the pacing, and I've learnt to get that right

I enjoy the one half marathon I do (Chester), for the atmosphere, but I do find that distance a bit boring
