Kicking the habit...

Edinburgh

I stopped smoking today.

Day one and I've been awake for approximately two hours and I'd say at least every three minutes the thought of the actual physical act of having a cigarette has popped into my head. I'm sure I am addicted to the nicotine as well but I really feel like I'm addicted to the habit of actually smoking.

I don't really want to go down the route of a vaper although I do have one, but it makes me cough. I just figure that will replace one bad habit with another. (I don't even know where it is which probably isn't a bad thing!)

Is anyone else giving up or do any of you ex smokers have any helpful tips for the cold turkey method or did you use some sort of stop smoking aid to help give it up?

Good luck with it!

Neither of us have ever been smokers so not much advice, although my mum was a heavy smoker for years and i remember her saying it was the habit of having a cigarette in hand that she found she missed. She replaced them with lollies which she said helped. She stopped first time of trying.

Hats off too you..i do not have any experience in quitting smoking however i did go 'cold turkey' on drinking full sugar and that was a hard time.

Think you need something to distract the mind and may i suggest colouring in.. It helped me a lot through stress, despression anxiety and i was so consumed with colours and keeping in the lines that id just get lost in the hobby..

Other things like sewing/cross stitch might be great alternatives too. Its just something to keep the mind focused and hands busy :d

It's already been said, but Alan Carr's "Easy Way To Stop Smoking" is amazing!!! I spent years trying to stop using gym, patches etc., only to lapse back into it again.

I read this book and stopped 7 years ago... not only did I stop but I actually enjoyed stopping too, and have never, ever wanted to start again.

Good luck!!!

I got some new sweary colouring in books for Christmas so I'm planning to use those in the evenings and I've set up my treadmill (which the cat seems to have taken a shine to!) and I'm off to do a healthy shop in a bit.

I feel like I've made excuses for too long in that I can't do everything at once and I decided that actually I totally can. Mind over matter... I just need to keep telling myself to pull my finger out.

On a serious note Best of luck,i packed them in over five years ago and it wasnt easy but keep with it.The health benifits are brilliant and take up walking or some sort of keeping fit and it will really help.

I quit about 15 years ago, and can't stand them now!

Stopping dead is the best way - and you'll be surprised how soon the craving passes as you change you habits. The habit craving only lasts minutes, and in a couple of weeks you will really notice the difference.

Just keep saying out loud - "I'm am ex-smoker" (never just say that you're stopping) and you will believe it and stick with it.

There and to the left a bit

Quit 7 months ago but DO vape as a replacement currently - that said all previous attempts to quit failed miserably, with vaping I can honestly say the cravings for the real thing have been kept at bay.

Whilst vaping can be seen as replacing one bad habit with another, the levels of nicotine in vape liquid are much much much lower than in cigarettes (not to mention the absence of other harmful chemicals) - why not use your vaper as a crutch for when the cravings get too strong?

We both stopped smoking over 5 years ago.

Mr went down the route of patches and I just stopped.

Day 1 for me was bad, day 2 not so bad and on day 3 I was climbing the walls. After that though it was fine. As you've said. The biggest thing is breaking the habit of what to do with your hands. But your colouring book will help, and if you have to reach for food the first few days too then thats ok as well.

I put on 2lbs the week I stopped, then was back to losing weight after that.

Its different for everyone but it really is just about breaking habits.

Good luck x

I get your ultimate goal is to be smoking free.. but by setting yourself realistic goals be better for you?

Try a totally cold turkey day.. write how you felt, how you combatted each craving, times of day down etc..

could one way be to reduce the amount you smoke be a wiser option in the short term and then from that progress to cold turkey?

As i stated before ive never smoked but can kinda use some of the mindfulness stuff i learnt from trying to loose weight to it..

when i was hungry id have a drink to reduce that hunger feeling. Some days id be ridgid and feel pleased as punch but then id have a day where id fail and think 'oh fuck it whats the point' then id waste everything.

IF there was a bunch of 21 roses (3 meals for 7 days) would i have thrown the bunch away because i had one bad/dead rose?..

honestly the answer was no. Id get rid of the bad rose and keep the other 21.

Cold turkey from the off might be super hard but just worried you could potentially fall quicker if the short term goal doesnt quite work out for you.

Perhaps know how many you smoke in a day/ week and have short term targets to reduce by 2 or 3 a day and see how you feel xxxxx

Your amazing for wanting to give up 3

Putting the 'cum' in Eboracum

When I actually gave up a few years ago I used a little nicotine replacement thingy from the doctors (like an e-cig but not battery powered), but once that ran out I pretty much went cold turkey. You have to wait out the cravings as they don't last for ever. Just do something else every time one kicks in and the feelings pass.

I did manage to kick the habit for two years and only started again because I was stupid. I've been a vaper for 3 years now which isn't giving up, but is at least better than smoking.

Well done OP

the actual decision to physically give up in the first place is one of the trickiest to take and needs lots of willpower to stick to so you are halfway there

I had a fiend who got through the first few days by just thinking 'I'll have one in a minute' every time the thought popped into her head ...that might work for you?

I gave up cold turkey almost 8 years ago and have to say it was one of the best decisions I have ever made...

good luck..you can do it

I stopped cold turkey after 5 days in hospital being treated for very high blood pressure. Although, after throwing every Cardiac test in the book at me for 5 days, the cause was put down to too much salt in the diet, I knew smoking wasn't helping. So I stopped from then on. It was like I flipped a switch and knew I would never smoke again. 8.5 years on I still haven't smoked again. I hope you find your switch

There and to the left a bit

The other thing I forgot OP that did help initially a few years ago when I tried quitting, most GPs offer a stop smoking service where they offer advice and prescriptions for things like Nicotine patches/gum - you have to go every couple of weeks and one of the things they do is test for nicotine levels in your breath. Just the fear of getting a lecture from the nurse was enough to keep me off them, so might be worth looking into.

Only trouble is it only lasts 10-12 weeks before they leave you to your own devices, but it's worth it to get you through that initial patch.

Oh good for you DG

It's one of the best decisions you will every make

I gave up last November- I switched to vaping until Christmas last year and realised it was equally addictive as fags and ditched it for cold turkey and sheer pig headed will power.

I'm not going to lie it was bloody difficult!

But like everything else ( annoying cliched advice ahead sorry! )

Give it time!

I used to smoke around 20 a day for over 20 years and if I had a drink around 87 million

Disgusting!

I feel so happy now that I don't smoke not only for my health but for all the other reasons -

It stinks

It's stupidly expensive

It dictates where you can go -

How long you can stay somewhere,

Minging teeth, hands, breath, clothes, house, car and even the air space you occupy with the disgusting fag!

You get the point right lol

End of epic

I did cold turkey over 25 years ago from a 20 a day habit and once I realised that as an educated, skint adult with children, I simply couldn't justify doing it anymore. It was my third attempt and I knew I would not fail.

Like you, I was probably missing the ritual more than the nicotine and recalled just how many times I actually enjoyed the cigarette I was smoking - rarely.

You have got this. You CAN do this. You know there is no benefit whatsoever.

I don't think anything can replace the ritual but it will go, think of it as muscle memory, nothing more. It's probably why the vaping industry is incredibly successful, caching in on the ritual.

I gave up 19 years ago and the thing I was told was to drink lots of orange juice. Probably for the vitamin C.

I've also read that the nicotine addiction goes within about 3 days. It's the habit that needs breaking after that.

When I quit bottles of water were becoming available in shops so I was permanently glued to one of them.

Determine to stop and never do it again.

Smoke your last fag on a sunday night and don't keep any 'back up emergency supplies' in car, home or work. Avoid smoking situations eg socialising with other smokers. Always remember that you will forever be a smoker but you just don't smoke anymore.

Worked for me 20 years ago. T.

Being around other people that smoke is hardest of all. Especially if your partner smokes or the people you work with. Start focusing on good health and fitness. Become obsessed with it. Helps me.

It also sounds minging but keep an eye on your gums. As the blood flow starts to return to normal when you give up smoking it can trigger gingivitis and gum disease. Interdental brushes are your friend.

Well let's ponder!

You're on a website called fab!

There are ten times (see Peachy's previous forum surveys ) as many women as men!

What could there possibly be in abundance on here that you could put in your mouth instead of a cigarette?

Be careful with your flavours if you're vaping. There was a report last week that vaping can lead to male infertility.

I think if I had a shit hot shower I'd spend way more time in there. As it is, I live in an old tenement and the water pressure is rubbish so I'm in and out quick style... there's no time for book club in the mornings.

"I stopped smoking today.

"

I was smoking 30-40 a day, tries everything and then I did research, found a good vape kit and never looked back. Haven't had a smoke for 2 1/2 years. Try it, you will feel better x

Keep strong, you will have difficult days but the worst is almost over...

As you said- its more the habit that needs kicking.

I walked round with a rolled up bit of paper for a while to suck on as i figured what i would miss was the feeling of the smoke hitting the back of my throat. Looked a twat for a fortnight but what the hell...it worked- that was over 25 years ago from 30 a day to none.

just put off for a few minutes and then you will find that 5 has stretched into a half hour - make a list of things to do round the house - no matter how small - sort out cutlery drawer - empty wardrobe and put back only what you need and sell the rest or get weighed in - tick them off as you go and you end up with a positive list as well as not having a fag -
