Spellings of professional

Why do loads of people claim to be professional on their profile then end up spelling the word incorrectly?

If you're going to make the claim at least act as if you are!

Answering for myself... Standards have dropped so far in this country that most seem to have the attitude that nothing matters. Until we start to "care" again, this country will just get worse.

As an illustration of the problem. (Not spelling related, but anyway..)

Watch smokers when out and about... Finished with that cigarette? Drop it on the floor..

Kids on Saturday, Northampton Market. Bought a phone cover from a phone stall and just threw the packaging on the floor.

Smoker who had just put his cigarette out underfoot told them off for littering!!!

Sorry to all out there that don't care, I will continue to have some standards!

I often misspell words when I get too excited about what I'm typing - I think there are certain situations where correct spelling is essential (i.e. work reports etc) but I don't worry when people misspell words on here

The point we were trying to make was not specifically about spelling.....

People who describe themselves as professional are making the point that they are "educated" and therefore are a level above ordinary folk who use the site. To then spell the word incorrectly (and perhaps others) perhaps demonstrates they are not quite what they claim.

This reply does tend to sum it all up, in a professional way! Correct spelling, grammar and punctuation do have their place in society or in certain contexts.

Equally, they don't matter in other aspects of life, more on the frivolous sides.

To some, it may appear odd that I hate to see incorrect spelling, grammar and punctuation, but it is a job to me! I run a small home based Proofreading and Document checking business; the more people feel they need my services, or at least have any doubts, then I will continue.

If anyone wants the correct spelling of any word on here, just ask!!

I don't feel that when people state that they are professional they are making the point of being a "level above ordinary folk" either. The idea of your fab profile is to describe who you are as people be it hobbies, interests or attributes.

My _iew is that if you are messaging someone, especially for the first time, you should make an effort to use correct spelling and grammar, because if you don't, then you give the impression of being slap-dash and possibly ignorant, and who wants that?

From what I have seen before, it is simply another "selling" point on the part of the advertiser, to bolster their Profile and try to make it out as superior to others.

How you determine it, is your affair!

For example Matthew is a professional chemist who throughout his education has struggled with spelling etc, you also have professional footballers and other professional occupations that do not require a high level of accuracy when it comes to the English language.

I agree people should make an effort when messaging people, i must admit i do prefer a well written message to that of 'text language', though on the other side of the coin it would not put me off talking to them further as it just could be they are poor at spelling etc rather than 'slap dash'

A profession is an occupation, when someone becomes specialised in a particular field is usually when it becomes labelled as a prfession however it still remains their occupation.

I'd disagree. There's plenty online about profession and professional, the whole business about self-regulation, simply being paid and the distinction between trade unions and professional bodies. That's not too important in this context.

Being a building site labourer is a job but is it an occupation?

Being a tradesman on a building site is an occupation but is it a profession?

Being an architect on a building site is clearly, to my mind, a profession.

I'd argue there are levels of competence and responsibilty attached to the various 'levels' of employment description and that's why the term 'professional' is used (and ridiculed) around here as often as it is.

Indeed. I noticed my error but felt a 'delete and replace' might look as if I decided to add the bit about there being no heaven as an afterthought.

Leaving it alone seemed the lesser evil.

I may not have explained myself properly as what you have said is what i was meant to have said in terms of a profession being used when a high level of training, education or expertise is required such as a teacher, doctor, footballer. However, i still feel that a profession can still be an occupation prviding that is their full time, paid work.

This always makes me laugh and sometimes I cant resist telling them, however.... I do sometimes wonder if they did it on purpose? My parents used to run an offlicence and my dad would deliberately mispell something easy on a sign in the window. He said people who were passing often popped in to correct him and when they did he sold them something! ha ha. My Dad, always the smart cookie.

We'd disagree about footballers. The term 'professional footballer' is used to distinguish them from amateur footballers and that goes back to what I said earlier about being paid (or not).

We'd also disagree about the 'full time' comment. My late mother, after she gave birth to me, went back to work, part-time, as an Advocate.

I'm not convinced.

I'd be prepared to accept (maybe) that all professions are occupations but I'd still maintain that not all occupations are professions.

Hence they are not the same.

Someone once found the list of professions that can sign the reverse of a passport photo for your application.

I guess it come down to the noun profession is used (perhaps incorrectly) to refer to an occupation whereas the adjective refers to someone who has completed training in an occupation such as teaching, medecine etc and could therefore be described as professional. And sign your passport

Carrying around too much resentment for your choices in life and the successes of others can be a damaging thing.

It's bad spellers who have ultra thin skins and go on the offensive that annoy us.

Once we were in a chatroom discussion about tennis (of all things but, you know, these things happen). Another couple used the word "racket".

We needed to reply and we couldn't avoid using the same word and we spelt it correctly "racquet".

We didn't say anything about their mispelling, we didn't correct them, but they took mortal offence and became really abusive!

What were we meant to do? Pander to them?

I am not sure you can give panders to anyone these days, they are an endangered species.

who said I had resentment?-my point WAS, that there are people in this world who can do well successfully without having to retort that they are in in some position that sets them aside from others...a c*nts a c*nt no matter what they claim to be in their social standings.

Just because you are professional at something doesn't automatically mean that you good at spelling .....

eg, you could be a professional driver but still be shite at spelling

Yeah ??

i haven't read others about this thread but i dont know why people feel the need to say that they are professional... having said that, just because your a bad speller doesn't mean you are an idiot, lazy, or thick.

"Why do loads of people claim to be professional on their profile then end up spelling the word incorrectly?

If you're going to make the claim at least act as if you are!"

Odd how people are intimidated by that word. I suspect the ones who don't like it are the ones who feel inadequate.
