This is a good idea. Maybe next year, someone can arrange for a group of you to get together in a hotel. Purely for Christmas with no expectation of pulling crackers etc....

I;m on my own tonight and it's my birthday too. Would be easy to be miserable about it and even easier to play for sympathy on line but I'm cool with it. I've had some truly dreadful birthdays and Christmases being around people I don;t want to be around.

I would say that I've had a great day today as I've been with my g/f, but I have no family and I've volunteered t Christmas in previous years, few people need to be alone but being proactive is seemingly beyond some

Bagman here:

More than 25 years ago now i found myself alone over the xmas period - there were things planned for NYE and stuff - but xmas day was to be spent on my own - and it was fine in the planning.

Come the day it was fine too - then i settled down to eat my turkey dinner - while watching a xmas movie on telly - which just so happened to be Dumbo!

ooooops! Big mistake - that scene where Dumbo and his mummy are separated through the bars of her cage / train carriage OMG! ???? - blub?? You bet i did!

Then i got a phone call from my big sis - just as i was blubbing - she came round and dragged me round to hers - (which had been an option anyway, but i thought i could handle it lol).

So my advice? Don't watch the xmas day movie if you're on your own!

How about not being alone. Currently nursing a poorly small child.

Feel better, those that are lonely, yes it's hard at this time of year- it's geared to togetherness so can accentuate what you don't have.

Maybe try and think what you Do have? Your health, for example x

I think if you're feeling lonely, especially when everywhere you turn it appears that everyone else is in a happy family unit it just accentuates the loneliness. I also think that asking someone who genuinely feels down about their solitary status to consider people who are worse off is unhelpful and possibly adds to their feeling of isolation.

Same plan, every Christmas I hit early morning gym sess aswell before heading to folks place for the "grand feast of a thousand mouthfuls"

Loneliness, regardless of the circumstances, is a horrible thing, so I'm sending the OP a big hug from me.

I spent many years in a miserable marriage, away from my family and friends... that was lonely. I plucked up the courage to leave him, so now I'm a single mum. It's Christmas Eve, my kids are in bed, and I'm sat here alone. My boyfriend is away visiting family abroad. I've gone from being lonely with an uncaring someone next to me, to lonely all on my own.

I hope for all of us that it's temporary. That those of us who want someone to share their lives with find them.

If anyone reading this is struggling tonight with loneliness, please don't keep struggling alone. There is lots of support out there, the Samaritans are always available to talk.
