Diazepam isn't prescribed often these days for anxiety, depression or any other mental health issue. The reason for this is it's highly addictive and there are better alternatives these days.

Like a previous poster I have been given it for pain relief and muscle relaxant. My doctor gave me just 5 days supply to treat severe back pain and muscle spasms. It does make you very sleepy, which in my case was a blessing. I hadn't slept for a week due to the pain I was in.

not exactly for anxiety it is basically supposed to knock you out. and yes, very addictive and doesn't touch the reason behind your anxiety so once you don't take them you'll feel the same. cbt often does wonders, mindfulness and other techniques might be more helpful long-term. but I don't know you and your story so all of this is just General gessing ... good luck!!

Proproponols are good for anxiety kinda freaky to when in certain situations you expect to be anxious but you are dead calm.

I always used to fall asleep after eating my dinner when taking them not sure if they are a beta blocker

I have been given Diazepam by the hospital for back muscle spasms.

For my anxiety and nerve problems I was prescribed Lorazepam. They made me feel normal again but didn't stop the panic attacks. I take Paroxetine for anxiety, depression and panic attacks. They work well for me but I still feel twitchy and they make me tired.

walking is a great thing for depression and anxiety - take in what nature provides and enjoy - a walk in the park has saved me many a time just by watching folk out and about with kids - dogs - listen to the birds - stand under a tree and look up and lose yourself in the leaves - all free and out there xxx

Citalopram is dangerous stuff, object to it at all costs.

The best thing for depression and/or anxiety in my opinion is a good therapist. I suffered from both at one stage but overcame it in my own way however not a lot of people can do that, everybody is different and it may take time to find the right therapist for your needs.

Personally I dont understand why a doctor would prescribe diazepam for anxiety as its highly addictive and only relieves some symptoms for a short term, its not a solution. However this is just my opinion based on experience, Im not a doctor.

Diazepam made me really drowsy, I felt like i was wrapped in cotton wool. I'm not a fan of it and only have it when it's absolutely necessary.

I just wanted to point out that different things work differently for everyone, including drugs. A medication might be a nightmare for one person but a miracle cure for another, so please don't dismiss drugs people have criticised because they didn't work for them.

Yes, for some people things like exercise, healthy eating, therapy can all help, and are definitely worth trying. But for others, it's a case of trial and error to find a treatment that works, which for me is a combination of 3 types of medication. No amount of talking therapy or walking is going to cure my health condition. Apparently one of the drugs i'm on is so expensive that nhs doctors are told to hold it back as a last resort. So after many years of trying everything under the sun, I have something that works for me.

Good luck in finding what works for you.

If only more people understood how debilitating anxiety can be.

I've struggled with anxiety and panic attacks and found that propranolol is wonderful for physical symptoms. But sometimes I need the relief of having my brain shut down for a bit, so was also prescribed valium (not an ongoing Rx).

It's an amazing drug for very occassional relief but I won't take it unless I REALLY need it.

Sometimes you just need to turn off your brain for a while and need some help doing so.

Hey Mr S2, hope you have a great Christmas bud.

I was on Lorazepam for yrs (same family as Diazepam) and yeah, it chilled my anxiety the fuck out - but I still had the same shit going on after. I found them okay when you needed a break. A week or two on them is pretty okay, just give yourself time.

Otherwise: I can't stress enough what others have said - invest in yourself, and get into nature at every opportunity.

Peace.

Unfortunately for some people, they/we aren't anxious "about" anything in particular, it's literally the way our brains work. So the idea of the problems still being there after the drugs run out isn't always applicable. It's a common misconception with both anxiety & depression, that there must be something you're anxious/depressed about, something you can talk through and resolve. Yes there are lots of people who suffer bouts of anxiety/depression because of a life event, but there are also lots of people who this doesn't apply to.

As someone who falls into this category, I get so fed up with people who think exercise, positive thinking etc will cure me. No, it won't. It may help some, but it's by no means a replacement for actual medical help. I wouldn't be able to function without my medication.

That's me too. I was blessed with the gift of bad nerves. Been the same since I was a child. I'm over-sensitive to everything, which means my body over-reacts to noise, light, heat and physical stress. As an adult I had more responsibility and had to interact, even when I didn't want to.

When it all gets too much my brain and body goes into meltdown. I shake, sweat, cry, panic and my muscles go into spasm. Without medication I couldn't function. I wouldn't be walking along in the sunshine, feeling like life couldn't get any better. The sunlight would be making me feel sick, I'd feel scared and paranoid. My phobias would keep me housebound.

The only time I enjoy nature is when I take my medication and can process everything properly.

You're very lucky you were able to do that.

I couldn't. I couldn't eat for months. I couldn't sleep until I was given medication and still don't without it.

I can think positive, I eat very well and fill my life with distractions. It only helps when my medication is working.

Ahh - lol, I think I may have not got my point across: actually, this is EXACTLY what I was trying to say XD 'I had still had the same shit going on' is me referring to what happens inside my own brain - not out there in real life

Like you Peachy, and others on here I'm on long-term maintenance medication for a biological condition. Personally, nature helps me out by like, dialling down the chaos. The point I was trying to make is that benzodiazapenes are great, but only part of a rigorous answer.

Hope everyone's New Year was peaceful.x

For all those on long term propranalol ever experienced memory loss/severly reduced "vividness" of memory?

I've stopped taking mine after 5 plus years as I've started to realise just how shockingly much ive forgotten in that time and not just forgotten but even memories of a few days ago were always kinda vauge.

Like my brain decided nothing really important was going on so not bother recording it (like how you dont remember your drive to work most days).

Since i stopped its a bit awkward (feel like ive had 20 red bulls for breakfast whenever i leave the house) but memory is now back to what it used to be.
