Does Facebook know we are on fab?

Kirkby

I mainly use my phone for everything to do with the internet, laptop not been turned in for ages and kids normally hogging the iPad.

Well anyway I've noticed adverts on Facebook for things I've looked, for example I might be looking on the Evans cycles site and 5 mins later, as if by magic I come across a Evans cycles advert on my Facebook.

I've just been on Facebook and as I scroll past the "people you may know" there is this blonde woman with know friends in common, but the twins practically hanging out.

That then made me think, if Facebook know what I'm looking at and then knows what to advertise, does it know I'm on fab?

I would hope there are no links from fabs to Facebook. I cant see how anything from fab should show on facebook.

I have opted out of my profile being listed on search engines like google etc .. so I would hope that would be the same for my photos too inc on facebook. Bit scary though.

Don't see how Facebook could know as there is no link between the two. However people have given us their mobile phone number when meeting and we stored it in our contacts, suddenly they appear on our people you may know list.

How does Facebook know what I've been looking at on eBay, that I've been in the next website etc? Is it just a coincidence that I have been looking at something then 5mins later it's advertised on Facebook?

FB will try to put a tracking Cookie in your web browser. That way they know where you've been and can target ads at you.

So, yes, FB probably knows you've been on Fab.

Facebook knows all. seriously, they have developed it to see what you look at and then guide any ads to be of interest to you. Google do exactly the same thing, but they are just a search engine, whereas FB is a social media platform. It's just doing what it's designed to do. using your phone for everything allows it to mark the sites you are most likely to be on, and anyone on Fab who has not removed themselves from web search will show up as local to you on Facebook.

And yes you may 'know' them but you don't want to know them or them know you

It's also suspected that FB uses the location services on your phone to see where you've been and will suggest friends to you based on that info.

Just a matter of time before they suggest you be a friend of someone you saw at the GUM clinic.

Most websites you visit will place a cookie on your device. Whenever you visit another site, it will have a look to see what cookies you have, helping to build up your advertising profile.

My method is to use "Incognito Mode" to visit all sites that I don't want to put tracking information on my device.

Also, bear in mind that any website you visit from now on will be stored for a year thanks to the new Snoopers Charter.

When you install the Facebook app you'll likely see (on Android anyway) "Allow this app to access your contacts?". Boom, there it is. Fb now has access to that info, if a number in there belongs to someone who also uses the app, it will recommend them as a friend. Clever really!

Facebook in itself is benign as long as you are aware that it will use every piece of information you give it to sell you things. Lock your privacy down as tight as you can and be aware that it is still the internet, don't put anything on there that you would be uncomfortable with your mum knowing.

Don't use the Facebook app, only view it through a web browser.

The app is one of the most invasive out there and the permissions it requires means it can mine data for profiling your activities.

What annoys me is that on so many devices the app is now baked into the OS build by the manufacturers and getting rid of it means voiding your guarantee.

It's quite possible to use the Android app and not have security issues.

But as far as I am aware, the full security settings are only available via the desktop site...which they handily advise people not to use.

FB basically gets it's revenue from advertisers. Just about the only thing they know about me is a very rough idea of my musical tastes because I follow a couple of bands and have taken numerous photographs of said bands. So I get fed ads for t-shirts featuring those bands.

Every other ad is wholly irrelevant because Facebook doesn't know what I'm searching for (lockdown on cookies). Last time I scanned I had just 17 cookies on my PC and 9 on my phone. I bet most people have hundreds.

Don't ever sync your phone or Google contacts with FB. Don't "upload contacts" when searching for new friends. And don't give your number (for phone, MMS or Whatsapp) to anyone you don't trust. Once someone has that number, they can plug it into FB and if you ever linked FB with your phone (even privately) they can find you.

For what it's worth, I don't think FB is trying to provide ways to "out" swingers...they're trying to maximise ad revenue. But by doing so, they do provide ways to identify people you've had minimal contact with.

See but why? All youve achived is you now get irrelevant advertising as opposed to relevant advertising.

Oh and

"Once someone has that number, they can plug it into FB and if you ever linked FB with your phone (even privately) they can find you."
