How do avoid killing your family over Christmas?

So my mum's husband's mum and brother came up today and he always makes more snarky comments towards to me when they're here - three in the past hour, yes I'm keeping a tally - and I do ignore him when he opens his mouth, but is there any methods for not stabbing him to death over the Christmas turkey?!

When I used to have Christmas with my family it did tend to get tedious and my sister absolutely loved saying shitty little comments to me. I would just enjoy the parts I wanted to enjoy and then when people got annoying I would sit in the corner and read until dinner. I did get a few snippy comments about how unsociable I was being but it was better for everyone all around and I never had to kill anyone.

So, enjoy the parts you want to enjoy and just focus on something else when you feel annoyed.

I thought from the OP that they were visiting you, but obviously not, otherwise you'd just ask him to leave if he can't behave like a guest...

Soooo, can only suggest a quiet word with your mum in a couple of weeks (when it can't be seen as the heat of the moment) to the effect that you won't be going next year as you don't feel that level of negativity is a useful part of Christmas, but you'd still love to see her, maybe one to one a couple of weeks earlier. Then, and this is the tricky bit, stick to it. Politely decline the invite, reminding your mum that you'd talked about it.

We're all entitled to the same "treat with respect" from our families as from our fab-verifiers, probably more so...and you wouldn't take that shit from a meet!?

I know it's not easy though (believe me I know!)

Wouldn't work. I ended up spending Christmas 2008 & 2009 on my own because of him. I felt worse rather than better.

Yeah, a few years ago he had a bad illness where he went deaf in one ear and gained bad balance... it should've only lasted a few weeks, he's had it for around four years now.

Can't go into other details about things he's done in the past but it couldn't have happened to a more deserving person.

Had an uncle like that luckily dont speak to said aunt or uncle no more but one day just turned around and said dont you ever shut up. Should have seen his face. Gets to the point where enough is enough dont let them ruin ur holidays.

I would wait until boxing day, don't want to spoil Christmas for everyone. Then have it out with him. Ask him what his fucking problem is. Tell him his constant snide remarks are downright rude and as a guest he should mind his manners.

If your mum sides with him then give her the ultimatum. Him or you! And stick to it.
