im about to by a van to convert into a camper .. cant decided which one..have about 5 grand looking at hi roof LWB vans ideally ..any feedback from mechanically minded types gratefully received

The Peugeot or Citroën vans are ment to be good as they are a full 6' wide at bed height. Ours is a jumbo transit as that's what came up cheap and we have most things we want in there.

I have a lad who bought a 2014 transit, new for £15k and came to sell it as he needed something smaller. He couldn't get £4k for it this summer. Average offers were £3.5k and it was well maintained with low mileage. They devalue massively due to the amount produced so look around and barter hard.

i assisted a past partner convert a lwb sprinter - plenty of spce - full bed - kitchen area and wetroom for loo shower and small sink - bed area converted back to two bench sofas and a table -

Personal preference is the transit, I have a 2007 lwb and find its much better on fuel than the sprinter.

Space wise? Both about the same with plenty of options to build upon.

There is only one choice when it comes to a van and that is the original and best, the Ford Transit - It is the van all other manufacturers are trying to beat.

Think about it, how do we usually refer to a vacuum cleaner? We call it a Hoover - which was a particular brand.

If you're going to hire a van, regardless of manufacturer, you're after a Transit.

wAs a Peugeot master tech and he hated them..

I'd buy a Toyota if you don't want aggro but a sprinter rusts and tranny's have weak engine's..

Haha I can't argue with anything you say I had a Peugeot car and got rid in less than 2 weeks I was just saying they are wide which is why so many professional converters start with them.

Ive had 2 transits and both have rotted underneath, had 2 sprinters and both been fine obviously there is a cost difference but like most things in life you get what you pay for.

VW transporter are the default for camper vans.

Because of this there is a massive industry for all the fittings you will need and lots of competition to keep the prices low.

They are also easy to sell and hold their value

I would go down the Transit route personally. They are going to be a lot cheaper to fix when there's a problem.

I remember seeing a video about newer sprinters having problems with leisure batteries, as they have computerised diagnostics. Meaning your leisure batteries have to be completely separate to any existing electrical system. Whether or not there are easy workarounds, I wouldn't know.

Depending how much you going to use it transit you haven't got the reliability that you used to have with them even down to cost in parts for them sprinters more reliable but more costly and as previously stated the vw t4 and t5 the van of choice with plenty of off the shelf kits available plus super reliable it's just finding a decent one for the right mileage I wouldn't be to bothered bout mileage on these as long as you got some good service history with it but what ever you decide in have fun with it

Sprinter every time, drives car like and pulls like a train, we have three, swb and mwb two have completed 200.000 miles without any engine issues the other is a motorhome. We also own a transit, when you drive for a few hours you know when your in a transit, not so cheap and definatley not cheerful..lol. Go for a sprinter .

My mate has just got a mk7 transit torneo on a 60 plate done a low 170k miles and it's actually a Brahma..His old 06 torneo had nearly 700k miles up it..Yes seven hundred thousand..That's how good they are..It's the pumps that fuck up but done they can do huge miles..

A transporter is good but like for like year wise about double the value of a tranny

Transit for economy and choice of body types due to popularity, miss the sprinter and go to Iveco if you want to go large, avoid VW T4/T5 like the plague as double the price of everything else due to scene tax (and not that good as people who own them think especially the T5 )...

Sprinter if you can find a un abused model Or go for a VW crafter

If transit more your thing

Get a 2.4 rwd model

And don't forget to make sure the gas system meets the gas safety regs for leisure accommodation vehicles, if not this may prove it difficult to insure once converted

More and more insurance underwriters are asking for a gas safety certificate for the conversation, and any site you stop on can ask to it to this has stemmed from more people doing home concersions and the increased risk from carbon monoxide poisoning

yes and i dont even like them. too small and i think theyre over priced/rated..they just dont appeal to me i want a bit of room .

The main consideration is RWD or FWB van. I know they did the transit in both, do depends on which model/year/weight you are going for. The FWD vans have a lower floor in the back, such as the Fiat Ducato / Renault Master. The RWD vans (e.g. Iveco Daily, Merc Sprinter) generally go to higher gross weight and better at towing. So depends on what you are after. Be aware that the RWD vans are heavier so have less usable payload for the conversion. Also there are far more 3rd party parts for converting the Fiat Duactos that the Dailys etc.

As for the conversion itself, go search for the SBMCC... a great forum to join for this stuff.

Nothing wrong with the tdci. The problems are caused by them not being used for what they was intended and not being looked after it properly serviced. The older tddi will take the abuse better because it doesn't have to comply to the same legislation as the newer tdci which has better bhp mpg and all together a much smoother package but as with all modern diesel the dpf is the downfall. Looked after and in regular used it's a far superior to the tddi. Ditch the dpf and remap and it will serve you well

Dont agree with that i had a 2010 fiat ducato at work with over 290,000 on it and only had regular servicing

All diesel should be able to cover that though with proper maintenance and use. Where you3 fail is general build quality and lack of thought in design. They are let down with bad ideas that save penny's in manufacturing. You buy cheap you get cheap but that's just my opinion and more often then not make me a nice wage so long may they churn them out.

Vivaro van, doesn't rot like a transit will.

Had issues with my old Mercedes van. A design flaw in the engines on most of them mean the glow plug with carode and break in the cylinder head. You only know when when warning like for glow plugs comes on. It requires the head to be re coiled or worse taken out and machined. Also it rotted too.

Transporter is good but ££££

All vans have the good and bad points, rust, weak engines, fuel pumps, clutchs etc etc.

Any thing will rust, you can blow any engine, burn out any clutch and a fuel pump may or may not go at any time.

My advice would be, pick a van and find a good one, have a good look around it, even if you havnt got a clue you can spot obvious things like rust, badly repaired accident damage, dents etc, try to have s look underneath aswell if possible. Take the van for a test drive, go through the gears, listen to the engine and keep an eye out for clouds of black smoke. Have a look through service history aswell.

Because of this there is a massive industry for all the fittings you will need and lots of competition to keep the prices low.

They are also easy to sell and hold their value

think ive found the van ..

Ford Transit 135 T 430 ELWB ex police van for for £4500 .. with 104000 miles and a 3 month warranty

seems to be just what im looking for and being a transit any parts should be cheaper than a Mercedes ..also a rwd which someone on here said was a good thing ..

Me too my transit is crap but sprinters are also poor on rust, had a brand new transporter t5, it went well and refused to rust even when scratched down to the metal... it did start to fall apart a bit though, various bit's of trim and things like the cap on the gearstick... stupid main dealer prices at vw. I'm an engineer so find it easier to fix mechanical bits than rust.

I drive a lwb sprinter for work, the other vans are all mwb none have rusted even work horses after 6 or 8 years... The new transits seem quicker but for the way mine drives, the annual service, it hasn't needed anything apart from compressor parts which is part of the job I do

Had issues with my old Mercedes van. A design flaw in the engines on most of them mean the glow plug with carode and break in the cylinder head. You only know when when warning like for glow plugs comes on. It requires the head to be re coiled or worse taken out and machined. Also it rotted too.

Transporter is good but ££££"

Vivaria are great..I've had loads but they do AVE a shit engine & box..

The gearbox is a car spec thing and can't hack it.,intact the old 5 speed us better than the 6

Gonna show my hand now and declare I'm in the van game and have for the last 20 years been involved in selling commercial vehicles so I know exactly what is and isn't a load a shite

The boss hates them tho, we only ever get them back to service.. nothing goes wrong.

However the transits over the years we have had alsorts go wrong.

Not had that much over the new merc's. We dont seem to ever get demand for them.

There is a reason our local plod and post office use vivaros now and not transits

Yours might use vvaros..Ours use tranny's..

Vivaros primastars & traffics are made in the same factory with a Laguna gearbox.

If you don't carry weight the box lasts longer but they are prone to engine & transmission doom..Just look on eBay how many under 2 grand are fucked .. Loads and he owners can't afford to fix them..They buy a 2 grand van that fucks up then it needs £1500 spending to fix the bastard

Tbh I'm getting more into classic cars these days than vans as they fuck up and cost fortunes to repair

I did 186 000 miles in a transit and never had a minuets trouble with it . Other than the obvious , new brakes , tyres etc ware and Tare , mechanically it never let me down . Had a Vito before that (not a sprinter but merc non the less) broke down every other month after 70 000 . Give me a transit any day of the week
