Sooo last few days here in northwest we have had some bad fog. Some areas very heavy. What idiots are there driving out there that dont know the rules of fog lights.... is this not In the highway code anymore???? What are your thoughts forumites?

I disagree. When it's foggy, switch your "dipped" headlights on. Fog lights should NEVER be used in traffic, they are only suitable for quiet roads where you aren't going to dazzle people or diminish your brake lights.

Fog lights are only affective at the rear.. why the hell people putt their full beam on amazes me... it just makes it HARDER to see!

Was driving from Newcastle to Essex last night, cars with lights dazzling me whilst I'm trying to drive SAFELY home, and then there's the drivers hat don't even use the rear fog lights.

Learn how to drive in poor conditions guys....

Well we haven't had any serious fog down this end that I've seen, but people do seem to confuse a bit of mist with fog, and frequently see drivers putting their fog lamps on in rainy weather, and using their fog lights as a fashion accessory... If there isn't a vehicle behind them I put my full beam on as their fog light starts to dazzle me, give them a few seconds of their own lack of regard for other road users.

The rear fog lights are as bright as your brake lights, so when you brake... the break lights don't stand out.

I find most people use the rear red fog lights when there is no need, and it makes matters worse.

A lot of people don't understand how to use front main beams in fog.

Unless you have the low mounted front fog lights, it's best to use dipped headlights and have your rear fog light on in dense fog. Otherwise on main beam you just get a white sheet of lit up fog.

And I don't even drive!

Going to/from Luton and Jaydees on Friday night there were points where we could barely see the side of the road, and perhaps six feet ahead at best. It's been pretty bad the last few days.

I get the impression that such basics as which lights to use and when are simply not taught any more.

I remember being taught in school, and again when I did briefly learn to drive circa 1990.

I can also see with my own eyes how the wallies who drive on main beam are just lighting up a sheet of fog.

That's why there's usually just one rear fog light or they're in a totally different location to the brake lights.

I drove from Leicester to Yorkshire on Friday in heavy fog and most people were using their rear fog lights, it wasn't an issue seeing their brake lights at all.

The only problems were the plums driving at 4mph while hogging the middle lane!
