About it being real. I wouldn't buy anything that felt like fur if it didn't have a label saying it was not fur.

When i was younger i went into Cardiff with my mum, i was under 16. I had a C&A coat on that had faux fur around the hood and lapel. We are walking through Queen Street when a man (early 20's) walks up to us and shouts "Murderer! Wearing a dead animal!!"

My mum (being gobbier than me) shouts after him "it's fake, you f*king arsehole!!" and we continue on our way.

I have never worn anything like that ever again. The experience was most disconcerting.

The trouble is they don't always label it. A guy on the BBC website yesterday bought a bobble hat for his baby, just had viscose and elastaine (or sow thing sinilar) on the materials but his dog went mental when they got it home. Turned out it had racoon fur on it. It's not way the most expensive side clothing that has fur on it either as it is such a cheap material these days. You have to visually inspect items to see if they have a fabulous run mesh at the base or skin. Or you can snip a few fibres off and set light to them. If the melt it's fake if they singe it's real.

I'm an advocate of about to tail eating and using the whole of an animal if we kill it to eat it so in that way I have no issue with leather etc buy we don't eat many of the animals that fur comes from and the way that fur is gotten is often barbaric so I wouldn't wear fur (unless we start farming and eating the animals)

I have a suede coat, a suede jacket, a leather coat and three leather jackets I also have several pairs of leather shoes and boots some handbags and purses not to mention bondage gear. I wouldn't wear fur because of public opinion but if it was a by product of the meat trade and humanely resourced I can't see that its any different to leather.

It's the way as that fur is harvested (if that is the right word?) because very often it's not a by product of the meat industry. We don't eat mink, raccoon etc and the animals do suffer unnecessarily.

Same with Uggs. There's some pretty shocking and horrendous footage of how fleeces are collected on line.

I dunno. I feel hypocritical because I do eat meat once or twice a week...

I don't have a problem with the wearing of animal fur that we actually eat but as there are not that many species have fur that we eat, it's just the farming of animals just for the fur I object to.

Just like the trade in ivory and things like rihno horn shark fin ect

I would, but i'd also happily kill it, cook it, eat it, and cure the hide to use. I'd prefer someone with better skill or knowledge perform the process but not afraid to know where my food or clothing comes from as long as the animal is treated as best as can be managed.

May seem barbaric to some but at least I know meat doesn't only come in homogenised packets.

I'm with you on this. It's a big thing to take an animals life so its imperative that you use everything apart from the squeak, oink or moo.

Fur farming seems awfully cruel and wasteful.

I would not wear one although you can now adays buy them much cheaper because of public opinion, but still I would not wear one any more as I am guilty in the past as when I bought mine I was told it was made from a well managed licenced farm but even so I would not wear it anymore

I have worn a fur coat (and still have one up in the loft), I wore it in mother Russia (not that I am Russian, but I can't help but say "mother"), as it was extremely cold there (about -37). Animal fur, pound for pound is the cheapest and best way to keep warm in some climates.... I am not sorry for that. Sorry

I know where my meat comes from. Legend has it my dad served up my pet rabbit for Sunday tea when I was a child but I won't wear fur from an animal whose body has no value. Of it did have value perhaps the husbandry of then would be more regulated as well as the slaughter.

Actually, if I planned on wearing the skin of any animal other than shoe leather i'd chose to not do so unless I could respectfully eat it as well.

I don't think there is any good way of killing an animal. Just have to accept if you like eating or wearing them, they're gonna have to suffer either way.

i have 6 fake fur coats and love them, think they look nice and are warm. but i don't wanna wear animal skins. even my sister, who is vegetarian, has no problem having a leather sofa though.

i do eat a very little animal products sometimes. feel bad enough doing that and dunno if i can even give up milk and cheese.

Mink are extremely evil creatures they will even kill their own, lots got released by animal rights activists and they have are no endangering fish and animals that live close to rivers, they can also get into hen houses easier than foxes and do just as much damage.

Unfortunately some animals should have not been bred to the amounts they have with how much they impact on nature

I buy ethically sourced pelts sometimes to make costume with. But if I can use fake fur then I prefer that. Good quality fake fur is more expensive than real fur in many cases - I pay up to about £90 a meter usually for the good stuff.

I can tell the difference, but that's because I make lots of reenactment costume, and hang out with lots of people who wear fur. I don't wear it myself, but that's mostly because I find it a little disconcerting.

Male calves are kept for breeding, raised for beef, low grade veal, shot at birth. I think you'll find it depends on the farmer. Being bred purely for their skin is not the case for all of them.

Waitrose have a scheme - they buy black and white bulls/steers for mince, they go at 24 months, I think.

I wouldn't knowingly buy new fur from a high street store as that is encouraging the process to carry on but I'd happily buy vintage furs from antique centres...being offended isn't going to bring the 50 year old Fox back to life so I'd rather see them used than fall apart on a hanger or destroyed x

If an animal has already been slaughtered for food then it's only right that it's fur/skin is also used.

Killing an animal specifically for its fur and not utilizing the rest of it is just wrong.

...is what I was gonna say. It is double-standards to say "I wouldn't wear a mink coat" (for example) and yet nearly everyone goes about in leather shoes.

It's a bit like when English people get squeamish about eating horses or dogs... and yet we're perfectly happy to eat Tesco Value chicken that's come from fuck knows where...
