What causes it?

I just happen to be somewhere in the world that I have not been before and I can't believe how chilled out it is. Everyone gives way willingly, no one speeds and every person you meet is polite, genteel and simply wonderful.

Oh..... And it just so happens to be one of the most affluent places in the USA.

Those things have nothing to do with the attitude here. If it were the case, it would be the same everywhere.

I am on a short break from a business trip and spending a few days at the southern tip of SW Florida and it is very, very noticeable just how unhurried, polite and easy going the drivers, cyclists and motor cyclists are here. I have not heard a horn sound in five days and the default position seems to be to offer to give way to someone else even if you don't need to. I have never seen this kind of positive driving behaviour anywhere else.

I've visited America a lot of times and have drivers and the people very mannerly and helpful!!! As a nation they really tend to get a bad reputation

We found the drivers in California great too. Not what the stereotype would lead you to think.
