I prefer petrol , 6 cylinders Nader man at heart , all depends on your own personal preference and budget , diesel is more expensive to buy but cheaper to run

Depends..if you do lots of miles (motorway miles) then a avoid a petrol car.

If inner city miles...then petrol is the better option. Also depends on the size of the car.

My ex had a suzuki swift, 1.3 petrol engine. Covers 100 miles on £20 of petrol. My BMW would cover 100 yards on £20 petrol

Petrol is the way to go now. Environmentalists are saying Diesel is the bigger polluter out of the 2 and there is possibility of more tax being paid on Diesel vehicles and Diesel fuel in future for this reason.

Please don't quote me here, but I remember reading something in BBC news that some EU countries are phasing out diesel in the capital citys,

Which leads it's self to how long before we follow suite.

Ford are currently doing a series of EcoBoost engines. They are low in cc, but are equipped with a turbo to increase the power

Lower cc means lower CO2 emmisions at idle and therefore cheaper road tax

A friend has a Hyundai i30 petrol. Great little car. Cheap to run and insure. It's a 1.4 petrol I think. And it's Focus sized

and scientists have concluded that diesel omission's are causing nearly 10,000 premature deaths a year so as with the other poster confirming that some European cities are looking at a ban and the above possible fuel duty rises etc, the days of diesel in our cities could be about to change for the better...

There is a definite anti diesel lobby at the moment and that can mean only one thing, TAX on diesel cars and fuel will rise. They are certainly on the hit list.

The new mustang comes in a 2.3 litre eco boost if I'm not mistaken, totally not what you're looking for but nothing wrong with a wildcard?

The older ones have less ecologically sound batteries... the footprint on them is more taxing on the environment than petrol cars.

Diesel obviously makes sense, if u want a car just as a means of transport. But deffo petrol if u fancy more than just a means from point A to B go on go for hot blooded petrol

yet mine is on 30 a year tax and is a 1.6 hmm don't believe everything greenpeace say. Yet cattle contribute the most fumes from their arse

Gas is the way to go - cheaper than petrol, same performance as petrol and same miles per gallon as petrol. Also better for the air quality than diesel. Backed up with an emergency petrol tank you cant go wrong.

Unless you are doing at least 15000 miles per annum go for petrol. A dual mass fly wheel failure on a diesel is an exoensive repair .

Buy an old diesel Landrover, but run it on veg oil. Cleaner than even LPG and very cheap to run - just don't follow me in it - apparently it smells like a chip shop on wheels!

It's the particulates and oxides of nitrogen (NOx) that make diesel fumes the killer. It's happening in a street near you. Diesel was originally encouraged as they have lower CO2 emissions than petrol. I say again...liquefied petroleum gas! Cheaper than diesels to run, and far cleaner.

From the introduction of European Standard Euro VI in September 2015, new diesel cars will have a DPF(Diesel Particle Filter) and an SCR(Selective Catalytic Reduction) system, in order to reduce the NOx emissions. The end goal with this is to convert NOx, using Adblue, into Nitrogen and Water.
