Dslr camera advice

hiding from cock pics.

A young family member who is developing an interest in photography is looking for their first proper camera.

I really have no idea where to start.

They have seen this one in Argos for £370,

Canon EOS 100D DSLR Camera with 18-55mm & 75-300mm Lenses

413/1432.

Please could those of you who know about cameras please advise me, on what would be a first but suitable camera kit.

I used to belong to a forum called Talk Photography.

Unsurprisingly it´s full of camera enthusiasts and they are very knowledgeable. Might be worth you popping over there.

There is a huge amount of good camera kit available.

Personally, I wouldn't go for a kit as sold by the multi nationals who sell everything, but go to a good camera supplier. Try Wex in Norwich who are fantastic and do a postal and return if unwanted service, along with part exchange later if you wish.

Again, just personally, I would stick to Canon or Nikon rather than other makes (but that is just my choice) as more lens's and further kit are readily available.

I bought a similar camera for my niece a few years ago its very good for the beginner.

I'm a Nikon girl too but you can't actually go wrong with Wex as mentioned above.

However I would suggest that they go into John Lewis or somewhere else with a decent range and see how the camera actually feels in their hands. I chose Nikon over Canon simply because I liked the feel of the Nikon better.

For a starter kit, they're ideal.

I'm a wedding photographer and started out with a kit very similar to that.

I'd highly recommend Wex Photographics website to do some more research. They always have deals too.

Have you found the prices of lenses getting a bit silly not from Nikon?

I actually use both Canon and Nikon outfits, finding very little difference between them. Certain colour saturations are slightly different, and functions I'd like on the Canon bodies that are only available on the Nikon bodies.

To be honest I've lost my mojo a bit with it at the moment but I think I have all the lenses I need so I've not bought a new one since my wide angle lens.

I have a Canon 50D which is a great camera but I need to get the instructions out every time I use it. There are so many buttons on it and I can't remember what most of them do. I doubt this would be a problem if I used nearly every day but I don't.

I would advise going for Canon or Nikon. My preference is Canon but as DirtyGirl says (quoted above) there is nothing like getting it in your hands to see how it feels.

That might not be so easy if you are buying it as a surprise gift but worth doing if possible.

If your family member really gets into it, they will find that the equipment quality is really in the lenses. Whilst the camera bodies have different feature sets the quality will be more comparable than between a top of the range and budget lens. Canon and Nikon have the best range of lenses.

That's quite a good deal OF, and suitable for most needs.

Just to make it clear, Canon and Nikon lenses are NOT interchangeable but cheaper lenses made by other suppliers are readily available for either variant.

I'm Nikon but it's all down to individual choice really

Why do they want a DSLR? Unless they are shooting fast moving action most photograohers are moving to mirrorless cameras. I shot pro work for 10 years on my Canon kit and L lenses.

I now pretty much exclusively use the Fuji X system mirrorless cameras. Image quality is easily as good as my pro Canon camera. If you can run to it I'd say the Fuji XE-2 with 18-55 lens

Unfortunately all camera gear has gone up recently because of the poor exchange rate post Brexit.

Any camera is just a light proof box with a sensor; it's the lenses that matter most.

John Lewis is good because they will price match and give you two years guarantee.

All major makes of dslr are going to be better than point and shoot cameras.

I have a sony myself.

Just be careful of cheap dear cameras, as these are usually "bridging" cameras with fixed lenses.

Make sure you can take the lens off and on
