US embassy staff have racked up a £5.2 Million bill for congestion charges in London and refusing to pay!

So much for essential relationship eh

It's an interesting one.

Boris says it's a service charge ( for what was already there and was free for donkey's years ).

The Yanks, and many, many more, say it is a direct tax for which embassies are not liable under some official agreement.

In this case, i say good on the Yanks.

because then everyone else around the world would do the same thing...

for example how many local bylaws and fines do you think would probably be acrewed by british embassies across the world?

it would just be tit for tat....

I've heard a similar term used in Moscow to describe the non-diplomatic use of diplomatic vehicles, such as to take the Second Under Secretary's wife shopping or the Deputy Doorman's Assistant's child to MacDonalds.
