Before I offer to take our son to see Rogue One, will I need to do some homework on the films I've missed, or is it a standalone film?

He grew up with the whole new Star Wars prequels etc, and so I watched them with him. Obviously I saw the original film too, but Mrs ddc managed to record an episode of Coronation Street over the middle of The Empire Strikes Back, and when we tried to record Return of the Jedi it didn't work at all.

Obviously he's seen them all a zillion times, but I'm mindful that "Who's the little green one again, and which side is he on?" can get a little wearing after a while...

It is set between 3 and 4 and is about how they got hold of the Death Star plans.

I guess if you have some knowledge of the SW universe you can nerd out but I think it should stand on its own feet.

And Vader is in it so all is good

It's kinda like episode 3.5 it tells the story of the deathstar and the rise of the empire, I'm going on Saturday and I'm soooooooo excited

Have you seen the original Star Wars (The one released in 1977)?

Remember right at the beginning when Princess Leia is captured by the Empire suspected of returning stolen Death Star plans to Alderaan?

Well, Rogue One is the story of how the rebellion stole the Death Star Plans.

So while it is, technically, a stand alone film, in terms of the timeline, it fits in right before 'A New Hope'

In effect, Rogue One is the story that is set out in the opening 'crawl' of Episode IV.

If I was you I'd sit through all the films just in case there's some small nods or references to other bits in the other films. You wouldn't want to be sitting there wondering "why is everyone laughing?" / "why is everyone ooohing excitedly?"

ok! You got me! I'll hold my hands up. I just want you to sit & suffer the new films like we all have had to.

But they've done it again! The new trailer looks great!

It's kind of taken from the opening crawl of ep4 star wars a new hope and should lead right up to the events of ep4. Whole new cast, with a couple of familiar faces ie vader, mon mothma and bail organa. A standalone movie that should lead right up to events of ep 4.

Picked my boy up today and guess what.

Now he wants to see it.

He's happy to go see it when we've got a bit more time together between boxing day and new year.

And his half sister is probably voming down to stay for a few days too, so I candrag her along - she loved The Force Awakens ladt year.

Guess that means I get to see the new one twice then

Having seen it, it is darker than any of the other films - and awesome for it.

I don't know how old the children are but it could be a bit draining emotionally

Tbf, that was me when I took him to see "One Man Star Wars" at the theatre: I was totally lost by the final third

In addition to watching the first 4 & a bit, I also was regularly roped in as "Player 2" on Lego Star Wars and Star Wars Battlefront, so I know enough to be able to wind him up by deliberately get the names wrong

I've just watched the first half of 4 and the last half of 3, so am fully ready for "Cheapskate Meercat Tuesday"

I forgot just how good the prequels were cinematically

It's a bit darker than most of the other films except for parts of episode 3 and most of 5

Bit more choppy, and war like which I think was the Gareth Edwards style, which at first I struggled to adjust to but got in to it

I would say know at least a little about the empire and Death Star helps, nearly all characters are all new and not related to original trilogy.

For the fans there is some great nods to original trilogy. The last act (esp last 5mins - worth entrance fee alone) is a fanboy wet dream and actually I think in parts felt like ep3.5.

Worth seeing but watch at least ep3 and ep4 before hand. Even though technically independent film

saw it yesterday, liked the characters and that they got chopped..

seemed a bit less pandering to the children now and looking at its fans who given it originally started kin ages ago is ok..
