Why is English such a weird language? Have you ever noticed how very subtle changes can have a huge difference to the meaning of a saying, like "he works IN a bank" would suggest a cashier in a high street branch, but "he works FOR a bank" would suggest a trader or something similar.

Why do we have pairs of sockS (with an s) yet we keep them in a sock draw, why isn't it the socks draw?

What other weird examples can we think of?

I once watched an interesting South Bank Show (when I was too d*unk to turn over) about how the Americans (Dr Webster?) took the English language and simplified it in order to make it easier for immigrants to learn.

Couldn't a sock drawer also be a person who draws socks?

(obviously he would keep his drafting tools in the sock drawers drawer... )

Well one of the reasons English is so complicated is when they invented the printing press, the type setters were paid per letter, not per word, so they put extra letters in to get paid more!

Plus we have the whole class "U and non-U" thing, so we can feel superior about people who use serviettes and go horse-riding

Pmsl when I first moved to Spain barring in mind I was with a Spanish n Basque lady that thought it was funny so let me carry on for a good few months ....every where I whent I kept seeing Jesus pintura ,,Jesus carpenteria ,Jesus cafeteria and so on I was thinking I know these spanish are pretty in to the religion n catholic thing but wow they really love the Jesus thing n name every thing after him ......then I met her sisters bloke ah fck it he dead so name ain't going a hurt Jesus Roland the ex Spanish water polo goal keeper top top bloke rip mofo miss you dude xxxx fellof a hotel poor fucker ......any way that was when it dawned on me n I was told that Jesus said hususe is a comin name on the scale of Dave or John here and the whom family had been taking the piss out a me for months lol
