I'd say it's paradigmatic.

If enough people say someone is a hero then they are indeed a hero.

There are many heroes given awards for which I cannot see any heroism having taken place.

Youngsters that have countless operations are an example that spring to mind.

I think being a hero can mean different things to different people , none are any less worthy than another -

The parents who make massive sacrifices to there own lives to bring up a disabled child .

The dad who goes out to work long hours in a job he hates to feed his family .

The depressed person that manages force themselves out of the house during a black dog kind of day.

All these are just as worthy of the title as somebody that puts there own life in danger to save/help others .

I have put myself in danger for others as part of my job but i think it takes more courage for someone suffering from clinical depression to keep doing normal day to day things than it does for me to do what i do .

It can mean so many things to so many different people.

If you believe a depression sufferer is a hero and fifty others don't share your belief, then he/she is only a hero to you......

I know what you are saying some people will see acts as heroic that others don't.

Good question. IMHO, and some experience, soldiers on both sides experience the very worst of their politicians failure and endure something only soldiers on both sides know.

Not all soldiers are heroes but many are complicit in heroic deeds, and like myself, have walked amongst heroes. Heroic acts are carried out in conflict by both sides - but it is often the winner who writes the citations. There are however great acts of courage where the citation was forwarded by the opposing forces as the act was truly an act of valour.

Insurgents however are a completely different case and it would take far more than this page to explain.

This question makes me think of those three americans who foiled an attack on a train ..... ( not sure if it was in France )

They were hailed as heroes. They weren't fussy on the title....... one of them said it was act or die. I think he said I did it purely to survive.

Now society can give him a title and say he saved very many people on the train.

He, however seems to know that he'd have still fought even if he had been the ONLY person on the train with the terrorist.

He wanted to live.

He didn't leave his warm bed and drive like fook to the train and knock the terrorist out.

He wanted to save his own life.

To be a hero , you only have to be thought of as one by one person .

Just because you are not hero worshipped by thousands doesn't make you any less of a hero .

Like the the single Mum/ dad being a hero in there sons/ daughters eyes .

A true hero doesn't need recognition or reward, they just need their name.

I myself have medals, awards, merits etc etc on account of actions thru my job which are nice to leave to my kids and I have been called a hero but for me there's no such thing as a hero. There are just people who do the right thing when they happen to be in a particular situation. My job just happens to put me in those situations more than your average man on the street. There are people that do and there are people that don't. You don't know which one you are until the time comes.

you can only really be a Hero if you are a woman and you would need to commit suicide if your lover dies.

Read the origin of the name from the Greek myth of Hero and her lover Leander

The word hero used as someone who does selfless deeds is an incorrect use of the word, even if Leander (the man who swam the Hellespont nightly to be with Hero) was used it would be disingenuous as he was only after a shag anyway.
