Why are the British so terrible at motorway driving?

Having had the joy of driving from the south coast to Yorkshire I can't stop despairing at the carnage that are British motorways. Having had lots of time to think (and nearly cry) why things are as bad as they are I think it comes down to a few things.

First off there are too many cars on the roads during rush hour so people develop really bad habits. I think this is why people are so incapable of changing lanes. Second problem is that people think it is OK to do 50mph on the motorway. If you are terrified please don't drive slower than the lorries. Thirdly I think it is because you aren't allowed to practise on the motorway while learning to drive.

Anyone got any other thoughts? Am I completely on my own on this?

There's also lots of people who stay in the middle lane? It's annoying cos I can't just undercut them lol

There's a lot of people who think it's okay to do 50 mph on the motorway? Tesco have a policy of restricting their trucks to 49.5 mph.

But one of the biggest differences between Europe and Britain, in terms of motorways, is that lane discipline is much better in Europe because vast stretches of the majority f motorways only have 2 lanes.

One of my ex's had a mother who refused point blank to drive on a motorway. I'm not entirely sure that she actually deserved a license, she pottered to the shop occasionally to do some shopping, then panicked when she couldn't reverse her Fiat Punto into a space that Stevie Wonder could get a Limousine to fit into quite comfortably

I passed my bike & car test within 10 days of each other first time in 1981

I was having this conversation yesterday while plodding down the motorway yesterday. Plodding because of everyone doing 50/60 across all three lanes, because the weather was a touch inclement.

I drive the motorways all the time and it's doing my fruit in.

Far too many distractions to the driver.

Radio.

Texts.

Mobile phone.

Sat Nav screen.

Switch them all off,

And concentrate fully on the road.

Most people are bad drivers, particularly on motorways as they don't look far enough ahead and plan their driving. They just drive right up to a hazard and then try and deal with it.

Too right, I've done enough of that it's mind numbingly boring

Back in the 80's I decided to drive from Derby to Hull at about fuck off o'clock in the morning to see ma nan. I took all the back roads and it was wonderful driving at 30 mph through all the villages

I swear some people don't look much further than their bonnets! And as for using the cross view..

I no longer use motorways to get to places. I'd prefer to use urban routes now. After years of constant Up and down the motorways, I got so stressed and angry when driving that it was detrimental to my health. Now I use them once in a blue moon.

Why motorway driving isn't included in the test or at least compulsory lessons before being allowed to drive in them is beyond me. And instead of cameras fining folk for doing 61 in a 60 they should have coppers out nicking middle land hogs!!

Another thing I think is a problem is that most British drivers seem allergic to the cruise control. If you compare work French drivers they all use it so traffic flows much better as people keep a constant speed rather than going between 60-75 all the time

So many people take on the attitude that nobody matters other than themselves from the moment they get into a car.

As for congestion there are two obvious ways to sort this:

1. Restrict lorries to between 7pm - 6am and 10am - 2pm.

2. The same for Audis and BMWs.

That will free up the inside and outside lanes

I drive daily on the motorway & I absolutely hate it. I swear if my concentration level wasn't as good as it is I'd have crashed tenfold in the last 6 months.

Biggest bug bear ~ undercutting & middle lane drivers.
