So, I've recently had my work hours increased to 16 + on a zero hour contract, being a lone parent I declared this with the inland revenue via phone and only information I had to give were employment details including hourly rate. Does this mean I'll receive my first tax credits payment before Christmas or likely to be in the new year ?

Depends how long they take to sort everything out.. you get it back dated til when you first claimed

Why would you 'start' receiving benefits if you now earn more?

It's to declare that I've had my work hours increased to claim working tax credits

You have to be working 16 hours or more to be able to claim working tax credits

It entirely depends! Usually takes 2/3 weeks which means you're perilously close. In the past I've called them after a week as the calculations will be further along by that point and they may be able to give you a more accurate amount and possible payment date
