I've had a look on the Internet for inspiration, while updating my wardrobe, and I've found that unless you are under 30, and don't know what carbs taste like, there is very little in the way of inspiration, for the man over 40.

Does this mean I have to go and get my old man dressing kit, and become a beige drawstring/elasticated waist trouser wearing old codger, never again to see the inside of next?

I feel a bit writen off

You need a woman to take you shopping they have a tuned eye and know what looks best on a guy.

I hate shopping but a woman will save you hours trying on stuff you shouldn't IMO.

Plus they love it if it's your money their spending and get a trip to the shops and new pair of shoes for them thrown in. ha

It's difficult for men in their 30s too. My husband can never find anything because everything is either for teenagers/students or dads. I think there's a big gap in the market for (non-designer/non-ridiculously expensive) clothes for men in the 30-45 bracket.

This is exactly how I feel!

I've been told I shouldn't be wearing hoodies, skinny jeans, trainers........all sorts! OK, I'm pushing 60, fair enough, but thing is, I feel only 30!

Here occasionally, but mostly somewhere else

Wear what you like, walk with confidence, and fuck anyone who tells you what they think is "appropriate".

My tastes have always been a bit...outré, but the older I get, the more I'm willing to embrace it. Hence the animal print, sequins, flowery patterns, etc.

I've developed my own style with a bit of help from Debenhams, M&S and John Lewis and bargain designer stuff on sale. It also helps that I've shed nearly 3 stone since last new year. I wear what I like and I'm in the process of getting shot of my 'Dad' clothes..

Funnily enough I can fit into some of my son's cast offs that were hardly worn and they look good too

I couldn't be happier with the options available to me. I've never felt better about my wardrobe.

The advantage with not having a teenagers mentality when it comes to my dress sense is that I can be fashionable without having to follow fashion.

Yes, it's a problem - especially when you're single and don't have a woman's input when you go shopping. I have zero sense of colour coordination!

I wear a suit every day for work, with a nice shirt (always double cuffs / cufflinks), sometimes a tie for more formal meetings and a nice pair of shoes.

At weekends, I generally go very casual and wear (skinny-ish) jeans / t shirts (usually music related) and in the winter months I'll wear an open (checked) shirt on top.

A lot of the stuff in the men's departments at the larger Marks n Sparks is good (I never have said that 20 yrs ago), and the female sales assistants are always willing to help you match up shirts with suits.

I've bought some decent stuff from FatFace (casual shirts) and Timberland (boots) - but their clobber is pricey for what it is.

In summary, I'm happy with my wardrobe / look - and I hope I don't look too much like "old ram dressed as lamb"

Can't beat Chelsea boots... good call. I don't know about you Mr Butler, but I gave up wearing t-shirts a while back (just didn't feel right), but truly enjoy the feeling of a nice crisp linen shirt (white or other), smart dark jeans and a thin lambswool jumper (dark grey, or dark green is my preference), roll the sleeves over the rolled up arms of the jumper does me okay. I quite like to wear a waistcoat occasionally

Oh you are not! I think it depends on your budget, but lots of good ideas exist. You may want to start with Pinterest. Just follow 'men's styles' and you get updates on lots of suits, jumpers etc. TM Lewin, Pink, and Charles Tyrwhitt (my favourite) does good quality clothes with really good service. So you can easily look stylish whatever your age. Good luck !

I think this kind of thing can be useful as a confidence boost. I've never done it professionally, but I think, for whatever reason, women are more open to the discussion on developing a style.

Presenting yourself well matters to many people. There's nothing wrong with that if it's what you need x

Central

Once you decide what your style is, you then just need to find the suppliers of the component trousers, tops etc - coordinate the look, then the colours. Some things are good staples that will support many styles.

For trousers, get your measurements and then select from the huge range of cuts. There's a lot more than skinny out there.
