Water pressure in your home

birmingham

I live in Birmingham, I don't think the pressure at my home is very good, anyone know what the typical water pressure should be ?

In the south, which is lower down the country, they get best pressure.

Right at the top in Scotland it's lowest.

In Birmingham, it will be middle pressure.

So move down south, or next time you're down there, bring a barrel of high pressure water back home.

On a more serious note. Soon after I moved into my place, the water company replaced the old lead pipes supplying my house with a new one direct from the mains. After they'd completed the work, the water pressure from the cold tap almost cracked the sink when it was turned on, and caused problems with my boiler; Turning down the stop cock didn't make much difference, so I had to have a pressure reducing valve fitted.

It's been fine ever since.

we always used to have lowish pressure - house next door had replaced downstairs loo and the plumber did whatever and we have been fine ever since -

Yes, our water pressure was rubbish too. Instead of going down south, we did the same, and replaced the lead pipe with large bore plastic.

We had to do it, most of it. The watercompany did from the stop tap to the road, we did stop tap to the house.

Much better.

They will tell you how to measure it in terms of litres / minute rather than pressure normally.

I'm talking about the feed pipe from the main in the road.

By increasing that pipe, the flow and pressure are increased.

Static pressure will not increase with a larger bore pipe, flow will increase providing there's suitable pressure to start with.

3bar static pressure would be classed as more than adequate. You can have flow issues if pressure gets lower than 1.5bar. (nb. 1bar =14.7psi)

The pressure is irrelevant if the pipe has insufficient diameter to deliver sufficient flow.

Hence the advantage of replacing the feed pipe from the main.

You local water company should be able to do a flow and pressure test for you, it shouldn't cost you anything. It may also depend if the water companies mains are a gravity fed system or are the a pumped system, maybe your ferrule has ( outlet on let on the main) may have furred up or it may not be open fully, or even you might have an old lead pipe supplying your property. Speak to your local water company
