4th Launch for The Big Society

Amid admissions that it hasn't been explained very well Comedy Dave makes his 4th launch of The Big Society.

Can anyone tell me what is The Big Society. Am I in it?

its the tories trying to steal the idea of people who volunteer in the community, be it with youth groups or whatever.

then they will sack lots of people to have the money to give tax cuts in 2015 to get re elected.

It’s a naive but well intended concept that clearly shows how detached most politicians are from the very people they’ve been elected to represent, many members of public, already do the things Politicians are now suggesting as a radical new idea and initiative,

Albeit in truth and simply put " The Big Society" is just the re-branding of volunteering with a govenment proding us all in the ribs trying to get more of us involved with it

It's a fairly sharp-elbowed prod in the ribs at the moment but once the Tory-led Coalition has organised the sacking of librarians, community centre caretakers and street sweepers by reducing the amount of money local authorities have to spend, it'll become a compulsory part of peoples' activity in order to qualify for any form of DWP benefit.

Lots of my pals contribute voluntarily, either financially or in terms of time - by hand or by brain - supporting organisations in their community but their support will vanish like snow aff a dyke at any suggestion that paid workers should be sacked and replaced with unpaid forced 'volunteers'.

Yes ,,,I'd agree that’s a very realistic appraisal of how this could turn out,,,, and a totally understandable reaction for fair minded people of conscience to withdraw their participation,,,,

I imagine many kind-hearted volunteers will experience a great deal of metal anguish about withdrawing their support though,,,, its catch 22 situation,that could ultimatly create a great deal of saddness and hardship

Did do a bit of investigation into this and it was difficult to make sense of how they think they are going to involve everyday folks. To set anything up you face a mountain of officialdom (as per usual) and there does not seem to be much practical help offered to wade through the paperwork.

For example with a lot of local classes which are not certificate oriented (ie attract some payouts/subsidies from government, folks might want to set up their own groups for say, painting, dance, pottery for retired groups say, or young families using village halls etc, but this is not gonna happen as it will be too difficult and will require hours of dedicated work to drive it through, together with someone who can deal with this sort of admin charge.

Don't hold out much hope really. There is a definite lack of co-ordination and direction on this so called "big society".
