Killer mobile phone drivers. Drink-drivers-street racers and speeders who bring tragedy to the roads will also face the maximum term under a planned shake-up of court guidelines. Ministers are to strengthen the law after figures show a third of motorists who kill or maim behind the wheel avoid jail.They believe treating killer drivers with the same severity as murderers will send a clear message about criminal behaviour on the roads. And raising the maximum penalty for death by dangerous driving from 14 years to life is among a wave of changes to how courts deal with motoring offences. (And not before time) lets up hope it serves as a wake up call to those who break the law doing this.

Gosh, I really hope so. Took our grandson to football and I think we saw all of these idiots on the road this morning!

I agree, I think there are still many drivers who see nothing wrong with driving while on the phone

I've lost count of the amount of times I've been in a taxi and the driver has just answered his phone

The best one I saw was in the summer an ice cream van driver with his music in talking on his phone, there was actually a police car behind him and as they tucked on behind him to pull him over he actually, while still on the phone, put his hand out the window to beckon them by, I couldn't quite believe what I was seeing

Look at that lorry driver killed 4 people due to him organising his music on his mobile phone while driving, he gets 10 years in prison.

Also a work colleague has been banned from driving on 3 separate occasions due to drink driving, even though he never hit anyone he crashed his car on 2 of those occasions. Yet nothing more than a ban from driving was given to him.

About time they increased the penalty.

I don't think killer drivers should be treated the same as Murderer's, there is a huge difference maybe treat it as manslaughter though.

It's good they clamping down on it. How many times do people have to be told? Imagine if one of your own got killed by a driver on a phone? Horrible.

Well last Tuesday there was a bad crash on the m4 by me and a guy was arrested at the scene for dangerous driving. He killed a 27 year old woman who was 8 months pregnant and also the unborn baby died both died at the scene and her 2 year old son had to be cut out and airlifted to hospitals long with her partner.

It's the m4 margam crash I'm following it to see what happens to the guy and the cause.

Ermmm while its a good thought in theory in practice not much will change..

Where will you put them all? So Mr X gets a year for say DD, while Mr Y gets let out a year early for a more serious offence yo make the room.

Build the prisons first, then change the laws to fill them up, not the other way round..

really agree with this..as well as being far stricter on issuing,or reissuing licences for older people..a lot of drivers seem to think it's some human right to drive how ever they want..

Mixed feeling on this as my farther was killed in a rta and was so fuming that was left as an open verdict even tho there was enough evidence to convict having said this I have had some one cut me up and throw abuses at me as if it was my fault some people don't understand its a 2ton killing machine! I got level with the car that cut me up and he repeatedly give me abuse and goaded me to run into the back of him which after a few mins of this I did tap 2mph the back of him as at this stage I was in completely raged ! Yet to find the result out having to go to courts to defend my actions it was me that's getting due care and attention which I disrepute as my driving didn't fall below a level of driving I think anyone would of done the same so . . .mixed feeling

At the end of the day it's not murder unless you can prove they got in the car with the intention to hit the person they killed

However if you get in a car d*unk or answer your phone while driving you know the risks, so they should carry the same sentence

A guy I used to work with was killed last year because a guy run a red light while texting and hit him on his bike, he got 18 month I believe he only served 9, it's insultive to the loved ones left behind

and there is the problem not enough traffic cops to enforce it prosecution after the fact it to late to many know they will get away with it 99 times out of 100

there is no defence for your actions, you lost it and acted in a manner that put yourself and other's at risk..

take whats coming and look at why you went from being cut up by someone to in a rage, need to address that aspect as next time it could end up much worse than this time..

My step brother was killed by a pensioner who couldn't see clearly in the dark while driving, knocked him clean off his bike (was in high Vis, helmet and lights on) would this class under the new laws as he got off with just a loss of license

i agree...you emetion a killing machine yourself..im afraid ive a very narrow view of driving dangerously...i think you drive d*unk, use your phone, lose your temper to the extent you endanger others once...after that, no licence,simple as...realy can't see why there is any question over this. People are supposed to be grown adults...if you lost your temper and pulled up a paving stone and smashed it over someones head, you could hardly plead inocence becasue you thought they might not actually die! i realy don't get the sense of entitlement a lot of drivers seem to have..

it's a thing that bugs me a bit...if those enforcing the law are flouting it then why should i obey it? in this case i do..i won't use a phone while at the wheel as it's potentially someone's life and i'm not rebellious enough to risk a life but it sticks in the craw does being asked to obey a law while the overseers of that same law happily break it.

If people don't you have unfit drivers on the road

I have epilepsy so don't drive as you have to go three years seizure free before you can apply for a licence

You would be amazed how many people ask me why i dont just lie

I don't lie because driving isnt that important to me im going to risk having a fit doing 70mph down the M6 and killing somebody

Not everybody feels like that though, driving to this guy was obviously more important than reporting a health issue and risking loosing his licence

what the law then has to prove is if these health issues where deemed a problem to the driver when they got in their car or if they didn't realise the danger

yes,this is crazy! i lived in town in shropshire a while ago,full of ancient half blind oaps..never seen so many accidents before in my life..and you'd hear 'oh theyd lose their independence if they couldnt drive'...wel, good! all a gp needs to do is call you, say do you think youre ok to drive? , and sign the form accordingly! crazy!! really hope new legislation forces them to be tested and retested after a certain age like in most other countries...at least now PSV licenece holders have to start being rechecked at a certain age..and don't get me started on the pisshead drivers up there..that seemed obligatory

We were hit head on by a d*unk driver. He was 4 times over the limit. My hubby had to take early retirement because of it and I was off work for 3 months. Totally changed our lives. As his insurance was void, took us 4 years to get compensation. So, I don't have a very good view of these selfish idiots.
