I heard on the news yesterday that the country iceland will sue iceland the supermarket for using their countrys name. Icelands ministry of foreign affairs confirmed it for using their name as they dont want to be associated with it, what do you think of this and do they have to change name?

Can't see the Icelanders being happy with that.

Or the Ice-landers as they would be known if you had your way

"Took them a while to come to that conclusion didn't it!"

I was thinking that, the first Iceland store opened in 1970, its taken them 46 years to decide they don't like having a shop named after them

Putting the 'cum' in Eboracum

"An agency linked to the Icelandic foreign ministry, said it has no intention of forcing Iceland Foods to give up its brand, but wants to ensure that the supermarket does not prevent Icelandic firms from registering the name Iceland across the UK or EU.

The government said the supermarket chain has launched and won “multiple cases” against Icelandic companies for using the word, “even in cases when the products and services do not compete”.

They don't want to stop Iceland from calling themselves Iceland, they want Iceland to stop making Icelandic companies stop calling themselves Iceland.

Brighton - even Hove!

I don't go into the Iceland shop expecting to see geysers and pickled herring. I think I can cope with the same name.

I think there would be more people work for Iceland than live in Iceland.

That's how I understood it but that's not a snappy headline. The story has been around for weeks but other news got in the way.

Sounds perfectly reasonable to me. Obviously Shag's far more simplistic version will be much more popular for its ability to stir up outrage

I took that quote from a 2 month old article. As Lickety says, this has been around for a while, so obviously not breeding the outrage the headlines are hoping for.

I mean, who can get passionate about a frozen food store?

What I'd like to know is,,,,if Iceland (the store) wins the court case, will Iceland (the country) have to change its name?

Any suggestions for a new name for Iceland (the country).

I suggest 'The land of the ice and snow, where the midnight sun and the hot springs flow'.

Sorry,I forgot to add. They could have a ready made National Anthem right there.
