Where is the party being held? What does it say for the men to wear? Take your cue from that and then go from there.

I favour longer rather than cocktail length for formal events. I also avoid strapless if it's a sit down dinner as it can look like you've got nothing on.

It really does depend on where it's being held OP. With regards to length, full length can be cumbersome. I enjoy wearing bright red and a bottle green as it stands out amongst the blacks but it depends on how formal a do it is and if you want to stand out.
