I said, PARDON!

I need hearing aids (yes, both ears) and feeling sorry for myself.

Anyone have experience of them?

What joys will I experience when I can hear everything?

Would it put you off meeting me?

Ooh I'm keeping an eye on this one. I had a hearing test a couple of months ago and they said I should see my GP for an ENT referral because its likely I'll need hearing aids. I've not seen my GP about it yet xD

No experience, but hearing aids wouldn't put me off meeting somebody

im borderline in both ears - two years ago was just my right ear - im putting it off but might have to succomb for work - im just worried that once i start to use them it will be like glasses and the need gets greater - so for now letting brain and ears work harder to carry on without

I've met two men who had them. With one of them we lay in bed watching the telly after I'd taken my contact lenses out and he'd taken his hearing aid out. He had to describe what they were doing because I couldn't see and I had to describe what they were saying because he couldn't hear.

my mum got some a couple of years ago and when the guy fitting them fist spoke the first time she wore them she jumped

she seems to notice crunchy and crinkly noises more now, like crisp packets opening and such. she hears bird song a lot more too now, she asked me a bit back if birds had suddenly got louder or was it her hearing aids.

i don't think it would stop me no...my first gf (i was five or six, we just held hands alot ) had them and i don't think my opinion of them has changed, they're just little things to help you hear a bit better, no different to needing glasses to help with vision really in that sense

Do follow up. I had some loss 14 years ago but opted not to have the very clunky device I would have needed then. This year I have been struggling to understand people.

I'm supposed to wear glasses, but squinting works. And subtitles and 'what?' seem to work for my hearing problems xD

The hardest part for me is that I can't hear what's being said over the radio at work (gigs, not the supermarket), and that's really not good when the ear piece stops working and I'm supposed to be listening to my boss

It's NHS and one of those ones that sit behind the ear with a little tube in the ear. The ones that pop in your ear won't give me the control I need, apparently. I'm being fitted in a couple of weeks. I was surprised how quickly I was seen and how quickly they would fit me - I had to turn down the first two appointments they offered as they're too soon.

An ex's mother asked me to help look for one of her contact lenses a few years ago, after a bit of searching I discovered that she'd put them both in the same eye the dozy mare

I've been doing that too but that last six months has been difficult, particularly at large meetings when I can't hear the questions from the floor.

Thanks for the feedback.

I've resigned myself to having them. I won't wear them all the time as hearing is also a brain activity. I just hope they don't make my tinnitus worse.

I got tested about 12 months ago, and it showed a deficiency in one ear, which meant I struggled hearing when there was background noise. I think it's gone worse and my job does entail working when there's background noise, so I have to face the fact I may need some kind of assistance or be withdrawn from frontline of work!

If I'm honest it terrifies me a little

get one with remote control... imagine the joy of being able to turn noise off! I live with permeates chemically induced tinnitus so everything I hear has to get over that noise.

So I may also need bionic hearing in the near future. I believe the technology is pretty good these days.

I have tinnitus too, which is why I can't get the smaller, hidden ones you can get in Boots. I have to have it programmed (I will have channels, apparently).

In many areas Spevsavers have a contract with the NHS to provide hearing aids for people aged 55 and over, just need the doc to refer you to them instead of the hospital.

I'm 51. It'll be fine. I just have to get over a) the fact I need them, b) the discomfort of having something hanging off my ear and in my ear and, c) the fact that they will take a bit of getting used to.

I find this thread to be rather odd actually..

Id just presume hearing aids to be 'normal' for a lot of people and id never ever bat an eye lid at anyone wearing them. Technology is wonderful. Just like glasses..

Having said that ive never had to wear hearing aids and not had perhaps a slight bit of paranoia or insecurity about them.

Hats off to anyone thinking they may require assistance and not being afraid to reach out and get it mind.. better quality of life

I do hope the quality of my life will improve; that I will become less stressed and angry as I learn that I don't have to concentrate and strain to hear what is being said to me. I've already been ably to turn the telly down.

The meet part of the OP was tongue in cheek. The feeling sorry for myself part was just about another part of my body failing... I needed glasses properly from the beginning of this year and other bits of me regularly fail.
