Following on from the lost thread it put me in mind of all the series that I've watched avidly yet felt thoroughly disappointed by the final episode or ending. Included are Lost, Dexter, SG1, friends...

please feel free to add your own and a little explanation as to why

Babylon 5. The writer thought he wasn't going to get the 5th series so tied up two large story lines in series 4. Then he got series 5 and had nothing left to go with, so the last series was shit.

As for Star Trek: Enterprise....

Very true, it's all about syndication etc. Many series would work better as mini series
