Why is it when you would like to have a private word with someone you can't due to their privacy setting.

this is just an observation by the way, I have my settings too and respect other people wishes.

I just sometimes don't want to air all my washing in public.

A solution could be:

to reply in the forum saying you'd like a private chat and ask to be friends

They invite you as a friend, you accept and then can have a chat

Bit convoluted but I think it would work

Sorry...I don't understand what your problem is. You have your settings, "respect" others having theirs, but complaining because you can't contact them because of them?!!

For me personally, it more about the fact that I get inundated otherwise with messages. I talk to people in chat and if I think I might like them, I send them a message if they have asked to send me one, that way the message barrier is removed for that individual. I have never just messaged a random person. I agree though, there are things that are best said in private but if I was going to say something private, I would hope that the message recipient knew me well enough to either have messaged previously or be on my friends list. When in chat - I have pm's set to friends only as well. Hope this gives you another viewpoint

Why?!! Suppose the person he wants to contact doesn't want to be his friend? People have filters for a reason otherwise they wouldn't set them!

I have also thought of that too, but as i said I also respect what it states on their profiles.

If the person to whom he wishes to speak doesnt want to they can simply give a polite no in the forum

I don't have a problem, neither am I complaining I am just making an observation that at times I would like to say something without the entire world knowing and other people passing their judgements where they are not welcome or needed.

That would get the person a ban from the forums.
