Coinciding with Black Friday - who'd have thought it?

Since they're no longer "teacher training days", can anyone explain to me what the purpose actually is?

Cynical answers not required, that's my starting point!

Inset days are still for teacher training. So some people might have to look after their own children for a day; that must be terrible for them.

OK, thanks all.

So if they're still for teacher training....

Why are there no teachers in any schools? Are they all at some secret central training facility?

I'm really curious about this today, no idea why...

Maybe they are training somewhere else?

Sometimes you train at the school. Sometimes you get dragged to some training centre.

And there are teachers in some schools. I'm not quite sure what planet you're on but round here they are in school. Well not now maybe, cos it's hometime. But they were earlier.

I could answer that, but it would bump the thread into the Politics Forum and we'd both be ripped to shreds before we had a chance to shout "THATCHER" at them...

Go to university for a few years to become a teacher and you'll find out everything you want to know including how some children are little sh.ts and have been dragged up but the teacher still has to deal with the little darlings.

My eldest on an inset day - the teachers are training. Sometimes schools club together to get the training cheaper - our primaries do this

Nah, I police those. It was a rhetorical question, none of the schools round here are off. The OP is apparently just outraged at having to spend time with his children.

Why all the interest in all those lazy, overpaid teachers taking a day off to go shopping then? Or did I misread the tone of the post?

i was just pissing about with that answer..

and i'm not getting a sense of outrage tbh, i've asked it myself once or twice..i have a couple of pals who are teachers and they get a shit ton of time off so it is a bit of a wonder as to how come they need even more off to train?

i dunno, whatever,...i don't have kids so don't care enough to get too deeply into it.

Confirmed.

I don't see teachers as feckless muppets who do nothing - start a separate thread...

I was just curious, from a process point of view.

And I don't have kids, just nephews, nieces, and 25 more years of employment working with the output of teaching - is that enough reason to take a interest in society?

So what's your point? A few schools have taken an inset day on a Friday? What are we supposed to be "curious" about? Are you actually interested in inset days, what they entail and what's involved?

Reply privatelyReply in forumReply +quote

Ok, non-cynical answer then: your opening premise is flawed, because they are still about teacher training and they aren't all held at the same time. If some have coincided with Black Friday, it's probably coincidence because most people seem to hate Black Friday anyway.

I used to wonder what on earth they got up to, but a lot of my work now is visiting schools on these days and they're doing stuff like first aid courses, fire training etc. so for once happy to stick up for them. We know they get a lot of holidays compared to most, but the days are far from over once the school bell goes. Still envy them their summer holidays mind! ;-p

OP:

The inset days were added to the teacher's contractual days back in the 80s. So they are in addition to the days children are required to be in school. They are specifically for training. Sometimes this is at the school, sometimes elsewhere, especially when organised by the LEA. There have been occasions where they have been used as "team-building" days at places like Alton Towers, (when the shit *really* hits the fan) and locally some headteachers negotiate with their staff to carry out the required training during other periods, meaning the teachers can take the day as a kind of Flexiday.

Since today is Black Friday, this is an entirely plausible explanation. Ours are next week though.

Hope that helps.

(phew, managed to explain it without mentioning the NUT )

I've given up having the argument with people who think teachers have an easy job and holiday half the year.

One of mine has an inset day on Monday...thankfully he is old enough to stay home alone otherwise I'd need to take a day off work.

I have no complaints as my kids' schools usually tag them to the beginning and end of terms - this one was to cover a recent compulsory Saturday attendance for Speech Day.

Teachers pretty much work their nuts off at this time of year, so if they use some or all of the inset day to get their Christmas shopping done it's not an issue in my opinion.

Why do some schools have more inset days than others? That's a question that could be asked. The school my children go to have one or two inset days a year and normally fall the day before they break up for a half term. Whereas my friends children's school has already had 2 inset days. Surely ALL teachers require the same training and courses? I know a fair few within the education system, so I know how their day works (term time and holiday) and what kind of courses they do, but why do schools have different amount of inset days over the academic year?

I think they're e supposed to have 5 per year but academies can probably do what they like so long as the minimum number of teaching days is met.

If only! When we were NQTs, my mate dragged me out of a training day for the last session of the day - we missed the last hour to mooch around some shops.

And got a serious bollocking in the process.

Nah. It's not something you're allowed to skive. Unfortunately.

The Town by The Cross

Just a point , as I know several teachers, the FIVE days training was taken OFF their holidays.

They get LESS holidays than they did in order to keep up with innovations.

Why do people assume that they can just 'nip to the shops?' .........

Registers are taken ..... INSET days are WORKING days......

Go and teach if you want an INSET day.
