I had a merina coil and it was hideous. Sorry... probably not what you want to hear. I'm fairly certain it works for lots of women but I bled daily for almost six months (persevere they said) and had daily cramps. It was a physical relief to get it out. Never again!

I've got a Mirena coil - at first cramps, light bleeding and took about 3 months for my body to settle down. Since then best thing ever (better than pill). Once a year gets checked by nurse and last about 5 yrs. Would recommend

I had the copper coil and my periods were horrendous! Swapped to Mirena and that was better. Sterilised now tho

I was 45 when I had my mirena coil fitted after being on the pill from age 19.and having breaks to have children.best thing I ever had.uncomfortable going in.and I had cramps all that day but after that it was great.

I have two in the past ten years I think it is, the mirena and I have had no issues whatsoever with mine, I think I've been very lucky as other ladies I have heard they have had a few problems. But on the whole, I've been fine

No I haven't, I'm not particularly keen on having something implanted in my arm and I actually think that my other meds would reduce the effectiveness of it.

There are 2 types of coil with positives and negatives for both.

I had the mirena (hormonal) coil fitted in March. It did hurt when I had it fitted but wasn't too bad. I had heard stories about the pain and suggestions to take painkillers before you go which really did help. I had some minor cramps and spotting the day it was fitted and it was great until I got my period. Then I bled almost continually for 2 months and had bad cramps.

It took a good 4-5 months to settle down completely.

A lot of women find their periods stop - mine haven't. Before the mirena they were very heavy and lasted 7-8 days. Now they are much lighter and last 4-5 days.

One definite down side is I have put on weight. Not sure how much because I haven't weighed myself lately but I'm guessing about a stone. That may not be because of the coil though, more likely the huge quantities of crisps and chocolate I've been shoveling in

3 of my friends have got pregnant with the coil...One had the coil removed as soon as she found out but lost the baby. I don't think it's very effective...One friend getting pregnant...ok...unlucky...

I had a Mirena fitted 11 or 12 weeks ago.

Fitting was painful but mercifully quick.

I had bad cramps and bleeding for a week or so.

Since then my cycle has been weird and unpredictable.

I'm spotting around 3 weeks out of 4 but with no discernible pattern with light bleeds, like light periods for 3-5 days every 3-4 weeks.

I hope it settles soon tbh because it's playing havoc with meets.

One guy stopped replying to me yesterday when we started talking about a day to meet when I explained about the spotting.

I have a sponge thingy which means it won't be messy (and it really is only light spotting) or I said we could wait til it settled but it clearly squicked him out.

I've been debating wether to have this or not, I'm currently not on anything, I was on the pill for years and would rather not go back on it and I don't like this idea of the implant either, condoms are fine for now but not as longer term birth control, obviously for safe sex I'd use them but the back up knowledge of a coil is appealing, a few friends had them and after a few bumpy starting weeks they seem happy with them

This wouldn't bother me because I quite like period play but I can see why others are put off, some like it some don't

i had one fitted 3 times... i wont give you the horror stories but the short version was agony.. interfered with sex and had to have one surgically removed after it got disloged... got an infection from it too.. and fell pregnant on it... so

I have the best of both worlds.. no periods and no worries as the pill is just to regulate me...so i only take one every 2 days

I've had my Mirena coil for 4 years so due to get it changed soon. Had some spotting the first couple of months but since then not had any issues with it.

With the pill I always suffered with skin pigmentation and not had that with the coil.

Hope it settles for you soon. Mine was the same and it did take a while to settle. I bled nearly every day for 2 months then had light spotting for another couple of months. Now I get a light period every 4 weeks. Before the mirena I had very heavy and irregular periods. It would be anything from 3-6 week cycle. Now I know where I am and can plan things although it can vary by a day or two these days (note to self; don't plan to go to a club 2 days before you are due on

I had a mirena fitted and it was agony. Went for my 6 week check up and no sign of it! Bloody thing had perforated my womb and had to have surgery to remove it. I'm on cerazette and I don't get a period at all.

gor anyone that suffers heavy periods and really don't want anymore children, I would highly recommend an abalation( lazer the lining of the womb)

I had it done a few years ago. Best thing I had done as no more heavy periods. No side effects nothing.

Just a few hours in hospital, a weeks discomfit and no more periods.

Luckily I don't need it for contraception as Mr SnT had to snip years ago and we only do safe sex with others, I wanted it for period control. Now awaiting to see if gynae will give me ablation and sterilisation! Xx

Mine took quite a while to get used to but after a few months when everything settled it was great. Periods stoped after about a year and at the time so did my libido......umm maybe I need another one fitted.

I've got the Mirena and apart from a couple cramps and hot flushes when I would have had my period the first couple months, I've had absolutely no problems with it. I've spotted once or twice, but it's the best decision I've ever made contraceptive wise!

only problem i had with it was the coil gave me an infection (i had to go for a cervix coloscopy to check it wasn't cancer). they had to take it out as a precaution.

otherwise it was the best contraceptive i've used.

I've got the copper coil, only had a bit of pain when it was put in. I've had it in five years now with no problems, although 7 day periods are a pain! I can't use anything with hormones though they send me loopy

I had a copper coil fitted a few years ago as my body doesn't respond well to hormones. I got significantly heavier and longer bleeding than I used to and sometimes bled inbetween periods (only for the first few months). I ended up having it removed because of this, but I don't know what the hormonal coil (mirena I think) is like

Ive got the Mirena coil fitted and by far this has to be one of the best forms personally for me. Apart from having a few months of bleeding at the very beginning it's halved my bloodloss which is God's gift from heaven.

Had mine put in a week ago. Make sure you take painkillers before as a little uncomfortable going in. Wise to take a couple hours off in bed after as felt a bit wobbly. Have had some cramps but only like period pain and it now seems to be settling.

Looking forward to lighter or no periods and no hassle of pills. Good luck op.

The mirena usually works very well for most and can stop periods completly for most. Can take a few months to settle though. Copper coil usually makes periods heavier but no hormones and lasts 10 years. Both fitted the same and can be uncomfortable but as with any procedure there is always a small risk, perferation or explusion. Threads are usually left longer so can be trimmed at a later date if needed. But overall a good choice of contraception.

Forgot to add after its fitted you can feel sore or even nauseated I remember I did the first time I had mine fitted but then again everyone's body is different and reacts differently

I was in agony the first night too, really thought something had gone badly wrong. I was fine the next day, maybe a bit tender. It was worth it for me though. I don't regret it one bit. Try a hot water bottle and some nurofen if you can take them? Hope you feel better soon. X

Maybe not overnight but it does subside mine took a couple of weeks to go fully. As others have said, ibprofen,paracetamol, baths, hot water bottles and as much as you won't fancy it gentle exercise by which I just mean a walk x

I had some cramping after mine but nothing too bad and it eased pretty quickly. I'd see how you are tomorrow and then perhaps call your GP if no better or worse.
