Just scalded myself ...

I've just spilt an entire mug of just poured boiling water down the full length of my leg. Its lifted the skin off my belly and my leg (thigh and shin) is stinging like mad, thankfully no blistering. I've held it under cold running water but am still in agony. Any suggestions what I should do next?

cold water then wrap in cling film and straight to A&E

Cling film. It stops the air moving over it which causes the pain. It may still blister but don't burst them. It's also worth letting someone check it out as occasionally, the edges of the burn are shallow and will heal on their own but the middle can affect the deeper layers and need specialist treatment.

Covered and moist healing is proven to be the best method. Leaving the wound exposed to the air dries it out which causes it to crack and is more painful.

Up on them there hills

You need over half an hour of cold running water to take the burn out.

Did my hand last night (steam), tiny bit red this morning, little sore, however not in any major discomfort.

At least 10 minutes of cold water. Cling film. Ice in a tea-towel. Ring for ambulance.

Cool or lukewarm bath for the leg.

Burn creme from chemist. Ibuprofen or paracetamol for the pain.

You can call the doctor or go to the hospital but I imagine if it were that agonising your first instinct would be to scream and faint rather than ask some perverts.

Unless it's blistering...?

Ask NHS direct

Best thing to do is ask on a swingers forum.

Whatever you do, don't bother asking anybody with medical qualifications, they are a complete waste of time.

Actually, the deeper the burn the less painful. So don't go on the basis of pain, get it seen to by a professional!

I've just scalded myself too.

I swigged milk straight out the bottle, then shouted 'Stop doing that, it's disgusting!' .

Do I need Sudocreme and cold water too?

This is bad advice, see Topsy's post above.

Cling film is sensible, followed by medical examination.

GO TO A&E

just cling film, sweetie. But scalds can be more serious than you realise. The cling film helps to prevent the skin sticking to other things, and reduces the risk of infection. But you must go straight to a&e xxx

First remove all clothing you don't want it sticking to fabric!

Second go out the front door and run naked to your GP or walk in center.

once there point at burned area and repeatedly say ouch.

that should sort it.

and for tree surgery you need a big scalpel, and it's best not to do it in heals over 4" obviously.

Sudocreme !! Honestly it works. Used it on my son when he has really bad blisters from too much sun whilst he was on the beach with friends. It's great for ache too and even cuts, grazes, bites and cysts on dogs! It's like an all purpose miracle cream.

NO!!! I used to be a burns nurse, this is NOT a good idea. Keep burns covered and undisturbed unless they need debriding which is usually done in more serious cases.

The research does not support open healing; covered and moist is the way to go.

Sudocrem is simply an antiseptic with a tiny bit of numbing stuff thrown in. For minor burns it may help but those sort of burns heal by themselves anyway.

"Cling film to reduce the swelling. If it is more than a hand print (from your description it will be) you should go to hospital"

Cling film does not reduce swelling. In fact, in serious burns, if applied incorrectly, it can cause serious problems in the restriction of blood flow.

Cling film reduces the level of pain by stopping air flow over the burn and covers it to protect from possible infection.

...Up on the Downs

Get to A&E and get a proper moist, sterile dressing on it - I burnt my foot like this a few weeks ago and just ran it under the cold tap, took ibuprufen, buggered off dancing and let the air get to it later......but over the next few days every time I pulled my riding boot on another layer of skin came off until I took it seriously, dressed it properly, and avoided any pressure on it for a fortnight! I can still see the marks now....

Went to Dr. Mostly superficial but some 2nd degree burns. They've given me Flamazine and dressings. The nurse told me put a thin layer of the cream on and leave to air but cover under clothes for work tomorrow.

Has anyone used Flamazine before? I've googled it but am still none the wiser. The wound has taken on a different appearance since using the cream.

If I remember rightly, it's got silver in it but don't quote me!

Hand burns used to go in 'flam bags'. The cream was put on the hands then they were put in bags and sealed at the wrists. It made a soggy mess but it worked.
