" I meant suggestions for prawn substitutes... I think she just wanted to fit into the meal without being really obviously different... Sorry that wasn't clear... if all else fails I'll go with something completely different. " Oh! Maybe you could do skewers with cheese and olives or something instead of the shrimp?

" I meant suggestions for prawn substitutes... I think she just wanted to fit into the meal without being really obviously different... Sorry that wasn't clear... if all else fails I'll go with something completely different. " Grilled pepper/courgettes/mushroom... Not sure how that'll go down with the sauce though. Celery could work well a little mini salad

You could take it to the table and say 'are you the vegetarian tart?'

"Today I learnt that Linda McCartney does "vegetarian prawns"... well I never. Somebody suggested stuffed peppers... you could do those really little ones and stuff them with something that won't clash with the Marie Rose sauce, and sprinkle those in there as the prawn substitute?" I've tried the vege seafood. The whole family didn't like it at all.

How about some kind of Quorn thing in the 'prawn' cocktail instead?

"DG, I think you should avoid the prawn cocktail and so another 70s starter that everyone can have. It also avoids the caterers accidentally poisoning the guests with poorly stored prawns. " And the 'fussy eater' allergic to prawns being rushed to hospital. Devilled eggs are nice.

"I need help if you please... I'm looking for a suitable starter for a traditional Christmas dinner... the non veggies are having prawn cocktails (I'm aiming for a proper old school effort) and I asked the veggie at work what she'd like and she helpfully said the same as everyone else minus the meat! Seems a bit mean to give her lettuce and Marie Rose sauce with a slice of lemon! I've googled but not come up with very much... any suggestions? (I also have a seafood allergy in there too!) " Tomato, buffalo mozzarella and avocado salad xx

"I also have allergies to milk, caffeine, oats, cinnamon and the nut people are proper carry epi pen sorts. i suppose you could ask the allergy people what they normally eat and come up with some veggie concoction" That's what I did... thinking the veggie person would supply the answer... alas not. I'm trying to keep it simple. Something different for the veggie person seemed the obvious route but now I'm thinking soup is the answer!
