"The guy that has a stereo cable tied to his basket and drives round blasting chers greatest hits is something everyone should behold. It's quite nice to be walking down the high street to the sound of "not enough love and understanding""

" And what happens if they fail the competency test? "Tough shit love, you have to stay in-doors from now on"." But surely they must have a level of competency as the OP has said. Bad enough if they injure an adult but what about little children or another old person? Some are very selfish and don't look where their going. I'm not saying that all are inconsiderate. Xx

"OK I'm going to gergert slated for this, but ffs, can they please introduce a competence test for these things? I've been backed into twice, my son got knocked over by one, and this morning I had to swerve to avoid hitting an old dear on one crossing the road. I would have to live with that for the rest of my life had I hit and killed her, but any clown with enough money can buy one and become a menace to society. I understand how important these things are to the independence of the elderly and the infirm, but I'm going to be infirm if another electric battering ram takes out my Achilles tendons. Something needs doing." Something does need to be done! My dad has to use a mobility scooter and I'm forever telling him to be more assertive while using it. People stand in the way, walk towards him with no intention of moving out the way, never say thank you if he stops for them (which he does way too much in my opinion). I'm not saying people using the scooters should automatically have right of way, but consideration goes both ways

"My mum got reversed into by an old dear in Bon Prix. The lady in question sped off and my mum (who has mobility problems herself and uses a walking stick) had to take a seat and be administered First Aid by the shop assistant. Apparently the Woman is a well known menace with her mobility scooter in the shops at Bridgend Town Centre She's lucky she didn't have my handbag wrapped around her throat by way of a lasso." Some of them think they have right of way on pavements. It's horrible when frail or unsteady people get in there way .few times I have had to tell them it needs slowing down .some are too fast. I think some must alter the speed .

" Moped riders must have a provisional licence and pass a CBT.( unless they already have a car licence There are strict laws concerning the use of mobility scooters and powered wheelchairs laid down in the Highway Code ( rules 36 to 46) which cover use on lavements and the road; including does limits ( no more than 4 mph on pavement and pedestrian areas, different rules on the road ( but in the road they are subject to the same laws as any other traffic, including the need for lights and reflectors at night, etc.) Perhaps it should be enforced?

"I get the point about cyclists, but cyclists aren't supposed to be on the footpaths, shops, or malls, and I've never seen a cyclists trap everyone in the corner shop because they got their bike wedged in the shop doorway. The one bloke round my way haS been nickname "jax" because his scooter has a motorbike look to it, he wears a cut off, and he's known to get violent if someone is in his way, especially when he's coming back from the pub" Report to the police then; disabled or not; he is required to obey the law ( pedestrians have priority).

Be VERY thankful you don't have the need for a scooter, I know my dad would rather be walking

"I agree that some sort of road safety awareness test should be compulsory to ride a mobility scooter or a bike or moped. Not had any issues with them myself but I don't understand how when people get to a certain age or their mobility is impaired then suddenly they are automatically declared fit to buy and use one!" Because people can't walk doesn't mean they're automatically mentally unfit

You must have a provisional licence and pass the motorcycle CBT before using a moped! Many people using mobility scooters will have held a driving licence; however, despite that, many have no idea of the law regarding them. Over here, to use one on the road, you must get a certificate from a driving school, or from the police or the fire brigade, to certify that you have had 3 hours of instruction on the law regarding their use; and that you are mentally and physically able to drive it, and can see. which you must countersign to say that you understand the laws regarding them. Which you must carry, with the registration document. There is also a special ( very cheap) insurance to cover them or you can add it into your " public liability insurance", which is part of your ( compulsory) house insurance, or to your ( or a relative's ) car insurance.

I agree there should be some sort of test, thankfully my grandma, as stopped using hers as she's not well, in my job at retail, there was a lady, an she knocked 2ladies over,it was like dominoes! Then the lady went forward, an i ad to move the ladies head away so she did not run her over! Mayb a sound button tx speak saying slow down when in shops, also a test, if said person does not pass test, then a course should be taken, then re take the test again!

If I'm not mistaken people have to renew their driving license at 70 years old and it is then only valid for 3 years, this is so they can decide who is fit to be on the roads....same should go for a scooter.
