Ah! Well once upon a time during the Napoleonic wars, a French ship was sunk near Hartlepool, washed ashore was a monkey.....unsure what it was, the locals sentenced the poor thing to death by hanging (one legend is that they thought it may be a French spy!)..leading t centuries of derision towards Hartlepool residents.....I do not particularly like it but they became known as 'monkey hangers.'..Over time 'Hang us' - Angus...Angus the Monkey became the mascot for the football club, he stood for mayor and won!...You couldn't make it up!
