I'm around 200 pages - it's 700 pages long - into The Historian by Elizabeth Kostov and it's amazing! It explores the Dracula legend in a more modern setting but it isn't a horror... well, it isn't yet

Oh the Historian is a great read. I haven't read anything I was massively enthused about for ages...so just posting to mark the thread to see if I can pick up some recommendations.

I read something which sounds quite similar when I was in my teens called The Book Of Common Dread. A really good read.

More recently, but she completely different genre, was The Watchman by Chris Ryan. It's about an MI5 mole working his way up in the IRA following the Enniskillen tragedy. Again, I couldn't put it down!

I love The Historian! I went to a talk by her on her take on cultural and mythological beings and it's manifestations throughout time and the relation to world events. I loved The Night Circus, similar style of evocative writing with dark humour and cultural references aplenty.

If you fancy something existential, "Hunger" by Knut Hamsun is an astonishing read. It's been years since a work of fiction has had such an effect on me. The internal journey of a man on the edge of starvation, whilst he rambles incoherently and crosses paths with a range of characters in a small Norwegian city in the early 20th century.

Up there with Dostoevsky or Camus, it should be more widely known!

Well I'm glad to see so many glowing reviews for The Historian

I'd also recommend The Little Paris Bookshop by Nina George, and, if you've read Chocolat, The Lollipop Shoes by Joanne Harris - it carries on with Vianne's storyline.

It's an old one but Beauty by Sherri S Tepper is a cracking read. I really like Angela Carter and that book reminded me a little of her writing was both sweeter and darker simultaneously.
