In the Digital Economy Bill, the Government wants erotica and pornography websites to make sure their users are over 18. Sounds reasonable, you think.

But this could threaten our privacy by collecting data on everyone in the UK who visits erotica and pornography sites. Just this very day a hack has stolen the details of millions of adult website users. Making sure all porn sites go along with it is unworkable not least because many are registered and managed outside of British legal control such as the USA. So instead of accepting the move is impractical, a group of MPs want to force Internet Service Providers to block websites that don’t comply.

MPs are putting pressure on the Government to add measures to the Bill that would force Internet Service Providers to block erotica and pornography websites that don’t verify the age of their users.You can only verify your age by giving the website or a 3rd party confidential information bout yourself

This equates to censorship of legal content - potentially affecting tens of thousands of websites and millions of people.

Blocking websites is a disproportionate, technical response to a complex, social issue. The UK’s children need education, not censorship, to keep them safe.This plan would do nothing to combat the production and distribution of child abuse images.

Open Rights Group is an organisation that campaigns for intrusive and unnecessary web surveillance.

I cannot link here but they have organised a petition to say no to censorship of LEGAL content like Fab.
